Let me start by saying that I'm not into the whole "Chryst crowd vs. Guarantano crowd." I thought that it was absurd to even engage in such manufactured tribalism. We're all UT fans and we all want UT to win. Just because we have a different opinion on which QB gave us the best chance, that doesn't make anyone less of a Tennessee fan.

Furthermore, that type of tribal thinking tends to put people into the extremes. Many put it in terms of "Guarantano/Chryst is good or Guarantano/Chryst is terrible." Truth is, both have strengths, both have weaknesses.

Let me just say that I wanted to see Chryst play more at times this year. I thought he did a good job of getting the ball out quickly and seemed to put the offense into better protections. There is much more to playing QB than throwing the ball. His INT before the half against Missouri was a game-changer, but I think it was a communication issue. Had he been given the first team practice reps, that probably doesn't happen is my guess (but just a guess).

That said, Guarantano clearly has more arm talent than Chryst. Guarantano doesn't turn the ball over and he's generally pretty accurate. His flaws are that he holds the ball too long and doesn't get through his progressions quickly. And, I think, he doesn't understand protections or read defenses quite as well as Chryst does. I think.

I bring this up because I'm seeing a lot of folks saying Guarantano shouldn't be the QB in 2019, Tennessee will never get over the hump with him at QB, etc. I don't buy that. Here's the thing....Jarrett's shortcomings are correctable. They're not about God-given talent (or lack thereof). It's not about lack of toughness. He has all that. His shortcomings are all coachable. He can get better at going through his progressions. In fact, he improved on that from last year, no reason to think he cannot further improve. He can understand protections and reading defenses better, as well.

There is no guarantee that he will get better in those areas. But I suspect he will. Let's not act like we know for certain that 2019 Jarrett Guarantano can't be a star QB. I suspect he can. Especially if his OLine gets better. It can't get much worse.

No flames from me. I think he can improve. At least he played hard, took a beating and kept on trying. Not sure that can be said about many others on this team.

I think he got better as the year went on, but getting your ass beat for 12 games eventually takes its toll and I think his body just couldn’t take the hits anymore.

He has shown flashes of being really good. His flaws can be corrected and I think they will.

Need a better Oline that’s for sure. So if he is the starter next year then I’d be ok with it, unless Pruitt can get a big time QB this class then sticking with JG won’t be bad

Spot-on.

Mike Leach is probably the best QB guru in the country. He constantly finds elite QBs that other schools missed out on. One of his famous opinions on QB recruiting is that you can't coach accuracy.

The thing about JG is that most of his strengths are the type of things that are "uncoachable", whereas most of his weaknesses are the type of things that can be coached and learned. You can't coach toughness. You can't coach accuracy. But you can improve your mental understanding of the game. You can improve your ability to read defenses.

This was JG's first full year as QB and he fared pretty well. He only had 2 poor games (Vandy and Florida) and both games he was under constant bombardment due to the lack of O-line protection. He's our QB for the next two years and he's only going to get better.

Throwing 50/50 balls up and hoping that the receiver makes a play on the ball =/= arm talent. JG has literally zero touch on his throws, and pretty much never 'throws his receivers open'. He might be the best QB on the roster, but that's not saying much, and outside of Arkansas, there's not another SEC team that would have traded their QB for JG this season.

When your OC trains you to throw back shoulder passes to take advantage of the receivers height, it's a play design. Not a prayer like you suggest they are. Get real with yourself dude, you're a joke.

I’m in the camp that says JG couldn't have started on any other SEC team this season.

No OC trains a QB to throw every pass greater than 15 yards so that they require the receiver to stop short and jump, or turn around and back pedal for 3 seconds in order to have a chance at a completion.

I don't think there's even been another UT QB with a dedicated excuse army, ready to try to spin his glaring deficiencies away from him; some of you guys should be working in politics for sure.

Have you ever heard the term "frozen athlete"? It means that when the lights come on, the brain doesnt work correctly or quickly. That cant be "taught" to overcome. He is 3 years into being a college QB, it aint happening chief.

How would Coach go about getting rid of the players that don't have whatever it takes to be a winner?

this Oline couldn't have started on any other SEC team this season. if JG sucks, it's because he's getting whacked 15 times a game

Kyle Shurmur finished the season with as many negative rushing yards at JG. Still managed to whip us, and throw twice as many TDs as JG.

Anyone with a brain seen the gameplan, use the tall receivers, chunk yardage, but sure you're just smarter. You need to go apologize to the trees in your yard.

I also love how you take the positive game plan from Auburn, and try to make it a weak point for JG your attempts are so disingenuous its ducking pathetic.
