The Dabo Sweeney lead Tigers of Clemson give up 70 points to WVU en route to an embarrassing loss in the Orange Bowl. Sweeney, in his 4th year as head coach at Clemson, had (according to most native fans) reached his maximum potential as a head coach and was very much on the hot seat. Coordinators were run out of town in a desperate attempt at salvaging Dabo's tenure in Clemson. Fast forward to 2017...

That is your case study as to why our hair-triggered, idiotic fan base should relax and let situations play out as they will. They won't, they will keep "demanding excellence" like it makes a difference (lol), but the wiser of us will enjoy the ride. Support these guys wearing our beloved orange, they may surprise you...

lol I knew this thread was coming today.

It's a pretty darn good point.
No sane fan should want Butch fired. What I mean, is although they may doubt Butch (I do), every fan should want him to turn the corner.
Butch is here for 2017, plain and simple, so what's it going to be?
Are you going to hope for adjustments and staff changes that produce positive change, or hope that Butch does poor enough to get fired?

Great point!

But when you lose to SC and Vandy that cost us the East title...sorry but their will always be backlash. Nature of the beast. The way it has always been.

Dabo and Butch are a lot alike in that they want all control. Dabo learned to give it all up and let coaches do their jobs and now we see where he's at. He just manages the game, motivates, and make the final call. He's not in on every single thing. If Butch can learn to give up the reigns he can be successful here because he does have the work ethic to get it done.

The difference between Dabo and Butch is Dabo went out and hired people like Chad Morris and Bret Venebales. Butch will turn around and take a gamble on hiring internally and I wouldn't doubt if he declines Shoop the opportunity to hire his own assistants. Dabo also beat a top 10 team on the road in his first year, and won a conference title by year 3.

This is just the worst argument that people keep bringing up against Butch. Like he is the first coach that wants to control his program.

Clemson won the ACC Championship that year(his third full year as HC) just saying.........they improved from 6-7 to 10-4, followed that with 11-2, 11-2, 10-3, 14-1, and now 14-1 and a NC. You also made the point about finding coordinators to salvage his tenure......which he did. I'd love for Butch to do the same. I really would.

So we're supposed to wait an indefinite amount of time with Butch at the helm because hey, we might be just a few years away from a national title? No thanks.

Have you noticed the trend on here? In 2014 it was look at what Saban did in year 2 at Bama. This year after the Vandy loss it was look at how long it took Saban to win at Mich. St. Now, it's look at how long it took Dabo at Clemson.

Some of these people are so hell-bent on making the narrative to justify UT's lack of accomplishments.

RIDICULOUS comparison. There IS NO comparison. In his first 4 full years, Swinney was 36-18 and had won his division 3 times and the conference once. A single embarrassing set back did not constitute a trend of any kind.

Oh yeah, you forgot to mention that the next season he defeated a very good LSU team in their bowl game.

With Jones, it is about trend lines. He is 30-21 overall but has a losing record in conference, has not won a division much less the SEC, and has been over .500 in the SEC only once in 4 years. His recruiting is trending off. His injury rates have been consistently above average. He has left wins on the field in each of his 4 years and has only one upset to his credit... and on the basis of pure talent even that one is somewhat disputable.

Again, if it makes you wise to live in denial... live on. But the comparison is completely invalid.

Ah yes, yet another derogatory form of a "I'm a better fan than you are" thread.

Both coordinators have changed since CBJ arrival, yet little has changed. But hey, calling half the fanbase idiotic and suggesting that they don't support " The guys in orange" because they are skeptical of the coach is sure to help. Good Job.

No. It really isn't.

Absolutely. He's got a year. The excuses are long gone. In fact, I think all of us likely including you said "2016, no excuses" before this season. Well, now A LOT of people are making excuses and after having been burned by their timelines... they're going Jehovah's Witness on us and pushing the date for the end of time back just a little further.... claiming that we previously misread the signs.
Butch is here for 2017, plain and simple, so what's it going to be?

One or the other. I hope there is no question about what to do. So frankly, the future of the program is better if he wins 10+ or less than 8. Eight or 9 wins probably keeps him at UT but will demonstrate with near certainty that he does not have what it takes to elevate the program no matter how many staff changes he makes.

I am a Vol fan. I am not the fan of any particular coach except to the extent they make UT a championship caliber program.
