First of all, read all of this before people start flaming.

I love the courageous efforts that Dr.King showed during his lifetime, and what he stood for. He was one brave man, who stood up for the right thing, and what he believed in. I am glad that he did, because of his efforts on civil rights movement, has made a great impact for the good of this country.

The reason for this thread is, if James Earl Ray hadn't killed him, would Dr. King's efforts still be as popular as they are today? Would we still have a National Holiday for him?

John Wilkes Booth should be on that list too. He made Lincoln famous.

Would we give a damn about Kennedy if he hadn't been assassinated? What about Reagan or tupac?

WWII wouldn't be so overrated if Ferdinand hadn't be assassinated.

Totally overrated war IMO.

I'm just kidding. I read it. I kind of think the guy is innocent though. Even Dr. King's family thought he was innocent. I think J. Edgar had something to do with it. The man had an IQ less than 70. He at least didn't act alone, i think.

Our government agencies work in mysterious way. There's no telling how many assassination and coups they've had a hand in.

I understand the crux of your arguement. The same point could be made of any assassin that takes out such a political figure at the height of their popularity and power. When you reach the top, the only place to go is down. If MLK had lived, it is very possible he could have done something to tarnish his image, hence damaging his iconic status. His lasting image is of greatness, and that helped to propel the civil rights movement even more. Sad, but he may have accomplished more in death than he would have in life. But that still doesn't make JER a hero, because despite the possibilities, we can never know what MLK might have done had he lived, so there's nothing to balance his death against.
