I was in Wal-Mart the other week & I ran into Jon Crompton's High School Football coach. We ran through some chit-chat, but then went straight to Dave Clawson/Fulmer & the 08 offense. He said he gets all the UT updates from Jon himself & one of the big things with him is that Jon's strength's were not used to his potential, such as him running more. He then went on to say that Clawson had Jon stay somewhat immobile in the pocket & Cropmton had trouble doing what Clawson asked. The coach seamed to think it was the offense & the schemes.

Cromp was the #2 Pro QB behind Ryan P. from LSU; he was a 5 star hs prospect & a solid comit for UT from day 1. When Crompton filled in for Erik A. in the 06 season he was ok. He nearly beat LSU (Sugar bowl winners; J Russtle was in his final year) he chucked some bombs but struggled to get the first downs needed to win. He also lost to AK when D-Mac was on fire. None the less, for a back up, he showed a lot of promise. Many of VN was in support of Crompton being the starter from spring practice to UCLA, but then it faded.

Don't get me wrong, J. Crompton looked bad when he played & I had my share of yelling at him in my living room. I still remember Dave Clawson's expressions when Crompton would mess up at the worst times. In all reality, we still don't have a stud QB coming in for next year that can carry us, so we are still looking at his development, or the other two QB's. I thought this coach had a point...so VN...what do you think?

Thanks for the update. One correction: wasn't Sanchez the #1 pro-QB in 2005?

i'm still hoping he can turn it around. hopefully most of the fanbase hasn't lost faith in him completely. maybe it was the coaching. it would be funny if he came out this year and lit everyone up.

If Kiffin runs an offensive like anything I saw this evening from USC, Crompton better improve in the pocket. Granted, USC did have the awareness to run the occasional bootleg, which Clawson seems to be apparently against.

once again, coaching is everything. Clawson was the biggest disappointment I've seen in a long time. From what i've seen it seems like Kiffin is really getting out there looking at the best possible coaches. Our staff (particularly d) looks like a great one.

Also, He should be referred to as CrompDaddy.

Seriously, he's got a lot of tape to watch and a lot of good experience under his belt now. I think with better play calling he will be more effective next year.

We will all find out relatively quickly about how well this staff can develop a QB. We're all excited about it. Go Big Orange.

Well of course Crompton and his high school coach are going to say that crap. I guess he didn't mention how his ankle injury was more severe than he let on the first to weeks which in effect didn't really give Clawson the option to run him more.

I think it had alot to do with coaching... If crompton does impress in the spring.. and is named starter.. He better have made a complete 180

And Crompton was throwing at the receivers feet when he played vs. LSU and Arkansas as well. I had a post asking about that when he had to play. He didn't complete over 50% of his passes then I don't believe.. all he did was complete those two big TD passes to Meachem in the LSU game and ran over a DB.

I just don't know how this explains:
* the total lack of passing accuracy. Everything from killing worms to hitting fans in the stands.
* the laser focus on the first receiver in his sight and inability to check off.

I am slightly concerned about the st. louis rams (bad team) TE coach being our OC, but he had Drew B & Kyle O at Perdue & they turned out. But is Crompton able to be developed? David C. had his reservations.

The players blame it on the coaches and the coaches blame it on the players, thank goodness the coaches are gone.

Sounds like his high school is pretty clueless.

He runs well, but throws a 4 yard screen pass off his own shin. Pretty sure that completing passes is still what is required for a QB.

To make a long story short...I'm not buying it.

:lolabove: I am with you. I just thought this would be a nice little discussion.

Have no fear...he is a good coach.

From everything I have read and heard is that he will outwork anyone. And he's pretty dang good with X's and O's as well.

FWIW.....I have a source that says that it was the offense and schemes too. He said that no one really got it also. Just fwiw.

Oh yeah one more thing... Crompton WILL successfully audible next year. I am not banking on tons of formation shifts so the offense will be able to change out of bad plays much easier than they could this year. And I hope that we see much less motion presnap. I think that Crompdaddy stared down too many corners once he realized he had man 1 on 1.

Clawson's terminology and offense in general was ridiculously difficult. I will give all 3 QB's the benefit of the doubt with that.

However, you still have to be able to get the ball in your receivers hands...whether it's a 500 page playbook or you draw it up on the turf..

I think Crompton's inability to read defenses was a problem as well.

What a lot of people don't realize is at the beginning of the year, Crompton and the offense went to the LOS with 3 plays, and it was his job to go with one depending on the defense. That was nixed quickly because of his inability to read the D.

We couldn't win for loosing some of the time though. It seemed when Crompton would finally throw a catchable ball the recievers or TE would drop it! That was so frustrating! But Crompton threw some lame ducks as well.
