Congrats to him. I don't begrudge a man for making money.

This is a business. And this is the way our administration should be looking at this and should have been looking at this awhile ago. This was going to be an untenable situation with Zo at the helm. Whether it was this year, next year or the following year, Zo leaving on his own or being fired was inevitable in the next couple years.

Dave Hart obviously had some questions about Zo back to last year when he didn't give him an extension. Common sense says that at 7-7 in the SEC he was looking elsewhere for candidates. I honestly don't think Hart was swayed by the late season run. At least I hope he wasn't. He should have done right away what ruthless ADs like Jeremy Foley and Tom Jurich would have done. They don't care about public sentiment. They do what's right for their programs. If something isn't working out, they make a change and do what's best for the program, other opinions be damned.

So today is a good day for UT athletics. Good day for Zo. Everyone wins. I just hope that Hart understands that getting a coach for this gig isn't a given. Don't take the fans for granted. We were here long before he was and we remember the days of black curtains. Reward the fans for being top 10 in attendance. Reward the fans for the passion we have, though sometimes misplaced. Give us a winner. Not a great name necessarily. But a great coach.

Pretty sure he can do better, won't take a whole lot to upgrade from underachiever.

I'm pretty sure you're overestimating the job. Time will tell but in terms of attractive openings, Tennessee does not look like a destination location for College Basketball. This year was a mess with a good ending.

Having an often times irrational fan base doesn't help the attractiveness of this job. I'm as passionate as the next guy about all things UT....but a lot of people make a lot of noise when ultimately their knowledge of the situation is surface level at best.

No overestimating on my end, this job is middle of the road at best right now. Doesn't mean that can't change with the right hire but getting another Martin will yield the same results.

100% agree. Zo was a good man, but not a great coach. He kept the players out of trouble and ran a tight program. He couldn't motivate the players until they got mad or felt sorry for him for the way they thought the fans were treating him. Then they started playing and got to the sweet 16. They were disorganized on offense and did not play well last season or the most of this season until they got mad at the fans. I wish him the best, but not unhappy he is gone. Next year could be rough, but this is best for the long term.

If he makes more than 1.8M, I don't either. However, if he will not exceed the 1.8, it means he is /was pissed at Tennessee and our fan base. We fans need to get our heads screwed on corruptly if we want to have winning athletic teams.

At least the 38,000 who signed the peition don't get with the program.

This was bound to happen: 1) Whoever replaced Pearl was going to have a tough time. The fan base was ticked off about what happened and those were just some tough shoes to fill for that particular point in time. Now that Pearl is out of the picture, things should be much better for the next guy. 2) I'm wondering if CCM wasn't a little too thin skinned about all this stuff. Yeah, there was a petition, but he still had plenty of fan support, and no matter where you go, there's always going to be some hard-arses. Lots of people still showing up and cheering at the games.

I just hope there weren't some nastier things that happened that isn't common knowledge that might come out later. Nasty people can say and do some really nasty stuff.

Auburn hired Pearl and the NCAA embraced him like he was a love child or something. They caused all kinds of hell while he was at Tennessee over that picture, but now suddenly at Auburn they are in love with him again.

Hart is gonna have to explain to whatever big name he targets why he was paying a coach with the 3rd best winning percentage around 11th best in the league, and was gonna raise him to 9th coming off a Sweet 16.

In other words, he's gonna have to convince this candidate that he's gonna have complete support.

that's going to require a mike hamilton style contract.

So long good riddance!
I still think the fans uproar and petition is one thing that helped get these guys to the Sweet 16. They were underachieving then played like they were capable of at the end.
I bet Hart gets an upgrade to Martin

Who wouldn't want to throw something in their employer's face when they are treated poorly?

you gonna be thin skinned when your wife gets harassed? You gonna be thin skinned when your kids get harassed? Y
He would never win the fans over here. You all clearly didn't want him. He took his talents to a place that will respect him and his work.

His move negates any chance that way have fire him which would inevitably draw all sorts of accusations from the peanut gallery and probably cost a hefty buyout. This was the best thing that could've happened but I am VERY disturbed by Hart's apparent surprise at today's events. My hope in him is fading. We need a UTK alumni at AD who does not have to bow and scrape to the faculty president.

I don't think Hart was telling the truth when he said he was surprised. He tried giving Zo a contract with a set $1m buyout. He knew Zo was having issues with that.

Did he deserve a raise or extension before the NCAA run?

How did he get treated bad? UT made him a rich man and even offered that raise and extension recently.

If he was that mentally weak......

Hard to disagree with your point here. My concern is that it'll be hard to attract much better than Martin at this point. I would have preferred to see the Martin tenure play out a bit more. This year, we'll be hiring a coach from a position of weakness. That said, we do have some pretty good positives including good attendance at games and what appears to be a 'stabilizing' athletic department.

yeah this is what i have been saying as a response, but i do not believe that for a second. ccm was a lot of things, but he seemed to me to be the opposite of mentally weak. i agree with what another poster said about this move to cal buys him some breathing room and is a great play for his career. i think he is looking at it (as he should) in terms of his career, and the best move was to go to cal, had nothing to do with ut fans or the petition. new coaches catch breaks, at least for a little while, and his had run out if next year was another poor season with no ncaa appearance. just my 2c
