It's Super Bowl week and there's really only 1 of 2 things that will happen...

I don't know. I'm not sure how big the NFL was back then, or how big the Super Bowl was back then. That was a big upset, but this one is pretty close to the top.

It's certainly the biggest upset since the development of the modern NFL televisual juggernaut. It does not, IMO, rise to the level of "unthinkable," which is what the Jets' upset over the Colts was at the time.

Maybe I'm crazy, but this has seemed like an easy pick the whole time. Take the Patriots' aging D in Game 19, the fact that the Pats hadn't looked very good in two whole months, and the difficulty of beating the same team in the same way twice in one year (hello LSU 2001!), and it's seemed obvious to me for two weeks that this would be a tight game. Fortunately I was able to profit a little bit off of that certainty. That the Giants were able to win outright was a pleasant but not entirely shocking bonus.

The Pats D is old and they looked tired at the end of the season, but they had two weeks to rest (not to mention a bye week earlier). Additionally, the Giants best WR by far was injured. Also, they were missing Pro Bowl TE Jeremy Shockey. On the other hand, New England had begun to show that they were capable of running the ball when they felt like it.

I know all I need about the third AFL/NFL Championship. Its just a difference in opinion, but I think your use of "insane" is way harsh. Besides, if the Pats were so old and beatable, the way I see it, they wouldn't have managed to do what no other team has.

The Patriots failed to cover 7 out of the last 8 spreads going into the Super Bowl; wagering against them has been basically free money for over two months. It's really hard to see how a loss by a team that has so dramatically declined rises to the level of "biggest upset ever."

All I know is that I regarded the Giants at +12.5 to be as sure a thing as you're going to get in the Super Bowl. So it's not exactly shocking to me to see them win outright. "Biggest upset in pro football history" is a bold statement, IMO.

If they hadn't broke all the records and went 18-0 then yeah it wouldn't be. The fact is they were, so IMO probably edges out the Jets win for biggest upset ever.

I get that the Giants almost beat them in the regular season, but the Pats are known for stepping up when it really matters. As a Colts fan, I can tell you that almost beating the Pats in the regular season definitely does not mean you will not be decimated in the postseason. As for the Pats not doing so hot at the end of the regular season... in one of the Super Bowl years the Pats lost to a pathetic Dolphins team. Brady played like trash. This was at the end of the season. A few weeks later they were tossing the best the NFL had to offer to the curb just like they always do. A team that had a perfect record and 3 of the last 7 Super Bowls just lost to a 6-loss wild card team from a weak conference. This is a colossal upset no matter what the Pats did against any spreads.

You value the betting line more than me.
