The head coach always has a say with things but Fulmer didn’t change stuff or call the offense. Would he provide input on a play call, yes. And at times decide on a play opposed to one OV might run. He did that with Cutcliffe also.

Felt my previous answer needed a little more.

I mean all head coaches do make occasional calls

That 2004 team was sneaky good. Freshman QBs + Rick as you said. 2 of the 3 losses were to an Auburn team that went 13-0 and should have been in the national title game. The win at UGA when they were #3 (and finished the season 10-2 and #7) was one of Phil's better wins as head coach and it gets kind of forgotten about for some reason. ND loss at home hurt though.

That SEC Championship loss to Auburn was one loss that didn’t bother me. We played lights out and gave it all we had, Auburn was just better.

I was so mad we did that. There was no chance of scoring.

Dooley was a panic hire after about 10 other guys said no. Butch was somewhat of that too after Gundy and Charlie Strong turned TN down, but at least he had some credentials. Unlike Dooley, whose last name was his only thing to stand on.

That was just cases of coaches not trusting Hamilton. Dooley was all that would come. Butch had been successful riding Kelly’s tail. Dooley was likely cheap, can’t recall.

Markets were really starting to change.

I see quite a few folks saying Fulmer should’ve been fired after 2005 but were people saying that then? Sure, there’s always a few who say that any loss but I doubt there were many truly feeling back then that we should fire him. It’s different looking back on it now.

Hamilton was our downfall. He got the AD job in 2003.

Everything else was a result of hiring a Climpson grad. Fulmer should have been canned after losing at home to Wyoming and Hamilton should have been canned then instead of waiting until 2011.

Never should have fired Fulmer! 05 was a bad year , we all know that. 08 they were changing offensive. Had Bryce Petty and Tajh Boyd both committed! Ranked 5th in recruiting the day they fired him. Would have went 6-6 , but lost to Wyoming, AFTER THEY FIRED HIM!! Worst mistake UT has ever made! Thanks Mike Hamilton! RIP

I give him one more year to get the Clawfence fully installed. Seems like he had a top qb recruited, if memory serves, before the Lane train came to town.

Program had been trending downward after the ‘01 season. That blown ‘01 SECCG left a very bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths, so much so that even the bowl win against Michigan didn’t seem to help. His last seven seasons, including two losing seasons, showed he was done and would not be able to get the ship righted. Add in those two blowout Peach Bowl loses that looked like he wasn’t even trying anymore. How many people would be saying he should have stayed even after a third losing season in ‘09?
