And if you do anything to Fulmer, what are your plans to change the trajectory of the program which resulted in the worst period of football we have seen in modern times

The issue wasnt firing Fulmer, it was creating an artificial salary cap for the next HC's salary (under $2M). To get Kiffin under that, we gave him a gutted buyout provision that was unheard of for SEC program. The $200K or so we saved there cost the university hundreds of millions over the next decade. This cap also kept Patterson out. Telling Patterson that his assistants werent cut out for SEC (Justin Fuente, specifically) was just icing on the cake.

We could probably entice Fulmer out of retirement to be the head ball coach now. He’s not much older than Rick Barnes who’s taken TN to 3 straight elite eights and just capped off arguably the best portal class assembled this year.

Wait until the end of the season and give him the dignity of allowing him to retire. I NEVER understood the point of firing him with 3 games left. If they had waited, we likely beat Wyoming, end up 6-6, and made a bowl game. Our team absolutely tanked that Wyoming game in response to Fulmer getting fired.

If they were going to fire him they should of done it in 2005, i'd said this forever. If Tennessee has been guilty of one thing over and over again it's been holding on to coaches too long. Cutcliffe helped for 2 years and as soon as he left it went back in the toilet. The recruiting was already slipping over those years. It was in a bad place by the time they fired him. Then comes Lane.. I said after he skipped out to USC it would be a decade before Tennessee did anything again. You can't recover from a series of events like that quickly. Mike Hamilton may have possibly been the worst AD of all time. Then you had Jimmy Butt Cheeks, it was mess up there.

No argument on Hamilton but Fulmer had a turn at AD also. It didn't take him long to screw that up.

Yeah. He did no one any favors with the Pruitt hire. Phil was just stubborn to a fault. His assistants sank his ship as coach. Not sure he should of ever been hired as AD but i really didnt care at the time. It was already in the toilet. The Pruitt hire kept it there..

I admit I was ready for a change but looking back, obviously I’d give him another year. I can’t blame Hamilton thou. I was excited about Kiffin as was everyone else but that was a complete disaster.

Get rid of Phil and hire ANYONE except Lame. Hell, you could have hired the janitor and he could not have screwed things up any worse than what happened

Fire him then hire Gary Patterson whom wanted the job at the time.

Kiffin doesn’t happen which means we don’t suffer through Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt.
Seriously, this might be the easiest question to answer lol. Not hiring Patterson when he wanted the job was one of the dumbest moves a football program has ever made and it damned us for a decade.

My God I wish the season would hurry up and get here. How are people asking questions like this in August 2026?

I fire him and hire the hottest coach at that time Gary Patterson who would have succeeded greatly with UT resources. But instead took TCU Horny Toads on a run they’ve not been able to replicate.
Why did no other big time program hire him if he was so hot?
