It's a must to hire at least 2 AA coaches...

I understand what you are saying and agree that there might be some merit to it, but could it also be considered a little racist to assume that black kids can only be mentored by and relate to black coaches?

Again, I'm not saying it's right. Logically, you would think we could just go hire the best coaches for each position despite race, sex, religion, etc, but that just isn't the case. I, personally, could care if the coach's skin is black, white, yellow, red, pink, purple, whatever as long as they can do their job. It isn't that cut and dry though.

This is spot on,,,, sometimes / most of the time,,,, perception is the reality.

Its racist against white people to hire a least good candidate because he is an African American over a white candidate who is superior just because he is white. I dont get why people fail to see reverse racism

Hiring the best coaching staff possible is not racist, even if they are all white. But that does not keep us from being painted that way.

That is the issue.

This is precisely what I was pointing out. I agree that in a perfect world, we would hire only the most talented folks and race wouldn't be considered in the equation but, my concern is that the vast majority of these kids are from areas far, far away from any real exposure to Tennessee the state itself, much less UT the school. They are subject to certain incorrect dispositions or attitudes and generalizations about the population within the state as well as the coaching staff, based solely on limited and unqualified experience such as from sources such as television, radio, etc...

For example, I have AA friends that were not from Tennessee originally, that tell me certain members of their family won't even drive thru certain southern states at all, ever, for ANY reason. This is due to their perception that those states' populations and government agencies, such as the state police departments, are all believed to be racist. There is an honest, deep-laden fear of being AA and in the wrong place at the wrong time and possibly being railroaded on false charges, or whatever. You and I, having known this area our whole lives, know this to be patently false for most of our areas anyway, certainly not the common occurrence here by any stretch. Most cops I know are the farthest thing in a million years from being racist at all.

I would hate for this kind of nonsense to be spoken re: CLK and Company, Knoxville area, Tennessee altogether, behind closed doors to prospective recruits. This info may only further misinform their already misconstrued assumptions about our people and, most importantly, about our program (if they can play, I could care less if they think I am a snaggle tooth, long beard, redneck, racist jerk or not:). And I also don't have to tell you all that when it comes to recruiting in college football. It's more about your national ranking than your integrity these days.

The only reason that we would have to hire AA coaches is so that other schools can't use that against us. Kids (black, white, etc) don't care who coaches them as long as they feel the coaches care about them (see Fulmer) and can get them to the next level. Anyone who believes AA recruits only want to play for AA coaches are as bad as people who demand black coaches be hired. There is a good ol'boy system in college football and there are more qualified black applicants out there than are represented.

I not a fan of everything Jason Whitlock writes, but he was dead on with his analysis of college football- see #9 coaching (FOX Sports on MSN - NFL - Some leftover Truths for the New Year)

I understand what you are saying, but that is not "reverse racism". It's just racism. There is no "reverse racism".

The % of AA aths on our team requires that they have certain mentors they can relate to.
Also, & most important, other schools will use this to big
advantage against us.
This has nothing to do with being racist, I just feel we need some qualified AA coaches, & hope LK has some in mind since Scott,Perry,Lake, to mention a few are out.
Seems Drayton might be made official soon!

I find it appalling that we would even consider hiring AA coaches. We need positive role models for these kids. Not someone who goes to weekly meetings to stay off the sauce!!
