The Dickensian opening to a Tale of Two Cities come to mind when thinking of Vol football today. I was considering how all the news in the last few weeks has seemed to be against our beloved Vols, from the game to the portal. These last few weeks are certainly the worst times we have had since I suspect the 22 South Carolina game, and it stings mightily. I challenge you to find a fan of any team who is happy with the current portal/transfer arrangements, and it certainly feels as though it has cheapened the entire game of college football. Whether a Vol or Dawg or Duck or Gator, nobody wishes to lessen this wonderful game to a shell of what made it so great: passion and loyalty for your school, your colors, your teammates and your fans.

Perspective and relativity are incredible things. If this is “the worst of times”, or at least the worst of recent times, look as how good a position we must be in. A few short years ago we were deep in the valley between the Schiano fiasco and the Pruitt fiasco. This proud, successful program had lost its last game to every single conference opponent it had last played, and a loss to Georgia State was in the near future. We were a laughing stock.

We are now a playoff team. One and done and in ugly fashion, but a playoff team nonetheless the less. All of our opponents have our game with them circled on the calendar. Nobody counts us as an automatic win. We are contenders for championships annually. We have a top 10 recruiting class coming in with the best OL in the country, and the best QB in the country committed the year behind him.

It is the best of times, or at least damn close to it. Losses will happen. For everyone. Its ok. Breathe, wear orange, smell the roses, and be happy.

Happy 2025 a little early to all of you Vol Nation, you perfect lunatics.

Having an impressive bowl win is always a good thing. Fans are pumped up and can’t wait for the next game. Season ticket sales are fierce. Heck Josh even introduced new quarterbacks the past 2 years for bowl games and dog whipped 2 excellent teams. Well 2024 was a successful regular season by any measure - but Vols got an at-large playoff bid with the worst possible draw and their last game on the road vs. the likely national champ was hideous to watch.

It was the best of times and the worst last game in recent memory. Fans need to shake it off and quit panicking. After last season there was anguish that Vols lost too many defensive backs and lacked running backs. let’s see how the staff reshapes the squad and start fresh in 2025. Two more days of wailing and gnashing of teeth is enough!
