One of my biggest gripes with Jg all along was his unwillingness to pull the trigger on those deep throws and the almost knee jerk check down that we’ve seen so often. Many of these check downs happen on a really important drives on 3rd and 7+ and go for just a short gain forcing us to punt. I’ve seen this 25+ times over the last 3 years. I’d make comments like one of jg’s biggest issues is he doesn’t understand the game. Sometimes it’s open because they want you to take it. Yet I was puzzled that Pruitt would always defend him after the game and then put him back out there.
Last night it all started to make sense. When Bailey came into the game and went almost exclusively to the check down. You start thinking about all the comments pruitt has made. He constantly talks about “taking care of the football”. It’s his most used phrase for sure.
Pruitt is telling these guys to not take chances amd that the check down isn’t a bad play. But sometimes it is a bad play. Over and over again JG has guys down field but he doesn’t pull the trigger. Maurer had the same issue when he came in. There were several times he rolled out and had 1 on 1 coverage but he didn’t throw it. ITS OUR IDIOT COACH!!!
Yes taking care of the ball is important but it’s a balance. You’re not ever going to hit big plays without taking some chances.
My god how bad of a hire was Pruitt. We took a guy that’s never been a head coach and has never worked on the offensive side of the ball amd just handed him the keys to the entire program. What’s worse? He’s a terrible communicator (which is kinda important as the head coach is responsible for motivating the players etc) and he’s a die hard bammer. The guy bleeds crimson. Why didn’t that immediately disqualify him from the job? You think the army has ever said you know we need a new general and ole “Mohamed whatever” sure is doing well for the taliban. I mean yes they technically are the opponent but we can pay them more and it’s all about the money. Lol. My god we’re a dumb program.

Bailey kept checking down, because he's a baby and he doesn't know what he's doing yet.

And in a normal universe, he was doing the right thing. That's what the coverage was giving him and he was taking it. The problem was that the coverage was giving him that for a reason.

He was not in a normal situation facing a normal defense.

In a different situation, he more than likely won't be checking it down like that. Doesn't mean it will be any better, but it won't be a constant hitting of the back.

It's Pruitt and Chaney for sure.

Literally ran the same play what 5 times in a row and threw it to the same position/player 5 times in a row too?

Time is of the essence. Didn't even run a play to the sideline designed to get out of bounds to stop the clock.

Coach and offensive coordinator are monkeys trying to use tools for the first time. This team is primitive because of them.

Exactly. Pruitt said after the game that it was pretty congested downfield, so checking down is the normal response, but the clock being where it was, Bailey should have taken some shots. Experience will help him with that.

To Harrison Bailey, Son, don't get discouraged. We can see the arm skill, and more athleticism than I anticipated. You do you! Do not be afraid to make a mistake. This is the SEC, its gonna happen. Your future is bright, if we can get you the leadership and the tools you need. You are the guy, that going to bring this offense into the 21st century. I can feel it. It is a shame that your first season has been marred by Covid-19, and your preparation has been severely limited. Better days are ahead.

Sorry,,, This is not going to change.. The guy at Ga. and this guy at Tn. are of the same mindset. They neither have had a QB of any significance and their offensive philosophy is "play not to make mistakes/not lose on this side of the ball. The only real difference is that the guy at Ga. seems to be trying to overcome himself and he has much better guys to work with. To me this approach comes from being very successful as defenses coaches. To me, you must to become a "head coach" rely on and understand that "there is another side of the game" besides the side I know and that I must give my offensive minds their head until I can become a well rounded head coach. DON'T THINK PRUITT IS LEARNING OR WILL EVER LEARN THIS.

I agree. They are running the offense, like a Bama offense, of years ago. Problem is, that Bama offense was backed by a defense that just curb-stomped you. Meanwhile, the offense just grinded you down to a nub, and put you away, late.

From SDS:

2. What’s Jeremy Pruitt’s buyout?
I’ll look it up later. The art of overreacting is disregarding a lot of common sense and practicality. And it most definitely is not practical to buy out a head coach in the middle of a global pandemic that just turned your cash register upside down.
But after that performance?
Losing to Georgia and Alabama is one thing.
Losing the exact same way to Kentucky and Arkansas is entirely another.
We are 3 years in, and Jeremy Pruitt still has no idea what he wants from his offense or which quarterback gives the Vols the best chance at success.
Same strategy. Same result.
Nothing infuriates a fan base or prompts a booster to find his checkbook faster than that dreadful combination.
