I am the consummate optimist..especially when it comes to UT football. However, I do not think that we beat Fla.

We know that Fla has big capability, so I think you have to give them the edge when comparing offenses.

It certainly isn't LSU-caliber defense, but, realistically, probably better than the current tennessee swiss cheese variety defense.

My very uninformed guess is that vegas will probably set the line at Fla -11. And vegas, though it pains me to say it, will probably have it about right.

So you base these O/D "observations" on what exactly? How do you know UF has big play capabilities? How do you know their D is better? Amazing, you have seen nothing to show this is true but just assume UT is going to get beat. :eek:k:

Vegas couldn't care less who wins the game and that's not the reason for a point spread. It wasn't too long ago that UT was a 17pt underdog in the Swamp (how'd that turn out?).

Florida is seriously banged up. Caldwell may be gone for the season with a ligament problem and is surely not playing the UT game. Brandon James, our premier return man, has a sprained ankle. Fayson, one of our quasi-running backs, is also questionable for the UT game.

My "observations" are based on what I have observed. That is generally how observations work.

I know how point spreads work, rothstein. This ain't my first rodeo.

Good news for the Vols special teams and D which need all the help they can get

Guys I am a really positive VOL but I am really feeling like we will get killed in the Swamp.

I'm just asking how their D is so much better based on their opponents? I'd don't think anyone can really tell yet. Plus (according to LG) they might be missing a couple receivers.

You did say your "uninformed guess" on the point spread and used it for your prediction. When the Vegas line means nothing then why use it? :dunno:

I wouldn't be surprised to see Caldwell play. If I'm not wrong (and please do correct me if I am), Cal's FB had a similar injury shortly before the game, and he played fine.

I should have been clearer. My uninformed guess is that the line will be Fla -11. I fully understand that lines are not predictors, but are meant to evenly divide better opinion. I am simply saying that I can envision tennessee losing to florida by an amount similar to what the point spread might be.

However, LG's new information has me feeling more optimistic.

UT will score lots and lots of points

Probably after it's too late.

In 1999, we all thought that Florida's losses on defense had left them weakened, and that we had an advantage. Then this guy Alex Brown showed up and recorded 5 sacks, and we lost. Don't kid yourselves that Florida will be soft defensively, and that we'll exploit that. They will bring it, they always do. And we'll have no answer for Tim Tebow. This game will be over by halftime, barring a major collapse by Florida on both sides of the ball. Us getting it together in the 2nd half won't help this week.

I hope I'm wrong, but so many times I've gotten my hopes up for this thing and been disappointed. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised if we win, than go in thinking it'll happen, then witness another 1994 or 1996 type game.

Curious if Gameday will be there.
Other games of interest would be Ohio State/Washington, Ark/Alabama.

I glanced at the schedule and appears to be the only matchup of two ranked teams. However, if ABC shows the OSU/Wash game, etc. then who knows. I think Gainesville would be a good spot for Gameday next weekend, with the question marks on both teams.

Espn and ABC are the Pac 10 network so I am going with the USC game as well.

Does anyone remember that before the '99 Florida game, Tennessee was considering wearing orange pants for the away game? I know we wore them later that year for the Memphis game, but why did we not wear them in the Florida game, and would you like to see them this weekend? Dumb topic, I know.

Caldwell's status uncertain for Tennessee-Florida game

By MARK LONG, AP Sports Writer
September 9, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Fifth-ranked Florida could be without receiver Andre Caldwell and running back Brandon James against No. 22 Tennessee on Saturday.

Caldwell sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee in Florida's 59-31 win over Troy on Saturday. James also sprained an ankle.

"I don't have the final word on them," coach Urban Meyer said Sunday. "Obviously, there's some concerns there."

Meyer said he would know the severity of the injuries later Sunday. Losing Caldwell would be a significant setback for the defending national champions.

The Gators also have other injuries.

Receiver Jarred Fayson injured his left knee in the game, but later returned. Backup safety Bryan Thomas also sprained an MCL. And Meyer said speedster Percy Harvin now has tendinitis in his knee in addition to the tendinitis in his Achilles' tendon that has bothered him the last few weeks.

Harvin was limited in practice last week because of the Achilles' tendon problems and was supposed to play sparingly against the Trojans.

But the Gators (2-0) turned to him after Troy cut a 42-point lead in half. Harvin finished with 56 yards rushing and 42 yards receiving.

Caldwell had one reception for 8 yards, catching a pass on the first play of the third quarter and then fumbling. He also had an 18-yard touchdown run in the first half.

Caldwell, the younger brother of former Florida receiver Reche Caldwell, caught 57 passes for 577 yards and six touchdowns last season.

Without him, Fayson, Cornelius Ingram and Louis Murphy would likely get expanded roles. Ingram caught seven passes for a career-high 105 yards and a touchdown against Troy. Murphy had six receptions for 78 yards.

Fayson also would return kicks if James is unable to play against the Volunteers (1-1). James was suspended for the opener pleading no contest last month to a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge.

He provided a spark for the special teams against Troy, returning one punt 32 yards and returning three kickoffs for 127 yards. He had a 59-yarder that set up a touchdown in the first quarter.

He sprained his ankle in the second half.

"The severity, we'll find out more today," Meyer said. "A lot of it depends on what happens in the course of the night."

Hope they get all their players ready. Also, I ain't playing the "we want all their best players on the field so there will be no excuses" card. I don't give a rats butt if they field a scout team. Any type of win over Florida is of paramount importance in the race for the SEC East!!!
