1989 cap end of the goal posts. Probably the only one "out in the wild". Was from the UT Auburn game where we poured onto the field. It was raining and we jumped the gun a bit but I saw the students swarm the goal post close to their section so I sprinted to the other end. We lifted it out of the ground and apparently I was shown on national tv in the front, carrying it around the field. I had no idea what to do with it after we had done a full circle so I saw the ramp out and led us out of the stadium.
As we (probably about 10-12 of us, including one of my buds) were trying to figure out what to do, we had the idea to carry it down the strip - so we did. Cars were honking, people going wild! Then we were trying to figure out what to do with it, so someone suggested we go to the fire station and they would have the tools to cut it up for us. So we trudged it back up the strip to some firestation around highland ave. By this time, its getting a bit annoying to carry so we were glad to put it down.
We explained to the fire fighters what we wanted and they were only too happy to help, gave me a hacksaw and I began to saw away. Fortunately I was at the end so I sawed the cap end off with about a 12-15" piece. I was also going to cut one for my best buddy who was 3rd string QB at the time. By the time we got one more sawed off, however, the fire guys came out with the jaws of life and clipped it, which was awesome - but it didnt make nice clean cuts. Upshot was everyone got a piece (including my buddy QB) but almost all were slightly bent and open on both ends. Only my piece was closed at one end and was a nice clean cut. We all went home to our dorms happy as clams.
One of the poles from the other goalpost ended up on the wall on a bar on the Strip So then we hear that the university cannot get replacements in time for the next game so they are offering a $500 reward for the end cap pieces. Even as a starving student I said, heck no! and fortunately no one who knew me squealed. Next weekend, I took it to the Lap and the Library and both greeted it with a roar as I held it high. The bartenders filled it with beer for me and I had a helluva time! That worked for me to get a few free refills btw but then I heard the admin was looking for it with some fierceness as they had recovered all the other ones and so I didnt bring it out again for a good while. Ah, good times
Its at my parents house in my old room or I would show a picture.
