Is this the worst defensive line in Fulmer's career as head coach?

1 sack in the last 5 games. :eek:hmy: With 3 seniors and 1 Junior as starters.

Next year will be a rebuilding year for the defensive line. Has Fulmer ever had a worse defensive line since he's been head coach? :ermm:

you would think with 3 seniors and 1 junior our d-line could be better but the talent just isn't there. i think Bolden could be good with better help around him, it just isn't there.

next year it'll prob be better pass-rush wise anyways. Ben Martin is going to be a stud and Chris Walker will prob end up on the end eventually. Bolden coming back with another year of experience along with Dan Williams.

Yeah, pretty much we are still rebuilding our line. There are at least two spots they aren't happy with right now.Frankly i wouldn't be happy with any of them.

It's easily the worst.

Say all you want about Fulmer's stellar recruiting, but we just don't have the players on the DL.

This year's group will give the 2006 squad a run for its money. Probably equally as bad as the post-Harrell line last year.

recruiting rankings don't guarantee anything...if memory serves, both Bolden and Mapu were very highly regarded coming out of high school........i'm sure someone on here knows where they were ranked or how many stars they had etc....

i think as of now, until something changes, this would just go to show that how many stars you may or may not have next to your name means squat.

so to that end, i can't necessarily blame recruiting. it's simply not an exact science.

Both were big-time prospects. Mapu was a 5-star player, ranked #3 in the country at his position. Bolden was a 4-star player, ranked 4th in the country at his position. Based on recruiting rankings, we should have one of the finest sets of run stoppers in the entire country...so, to go along with what you stated, recruiting rankings mean nothing once a player steps on campus.

Dumb question - How do they grade recruiting... is it purely based on their performance at high school.... the reason i ask is when players transition between college and pro... they are usually not just based on performance but also the ability to adapt to the pro level...

last yr heisman winner... technically the best athlete at college level was a 7th round pick... which means he wasnt the most suitable QB @ NFL level.... is there such a gap between high school and college football??

In the game just played, there is plenty of criticism to lay at the feet of the line. But let's not forget the number of times a highly regarded linebacking corps ran right by the chance to make a stop. Overpursuit that left them reaching at air.

Out of position gaffes can be mended though. The D-line depth is now an obvious problem that will take a toll down the season. No repairing that. It is what it is, and we will just have to live with it.

as Ryan Karl so eloquently put it.......we played "too fast".

it seems like defense is all he and the coaching staff have focused on in recent years, you get what you want

I think our DL will be better next year especially if G. Williams is allowed to play. Not sure being better than this unit is saying much, but...........

IMO, overpursuit is a weak excuse for pathetic play. Overpursuit had nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with Longshore having all the time in the world to throw the football. Overpursuit had nothing to do with their running backs being 4 yards into our D before even seeing a tackler. Overpursuit had nothing to do with the broken tackles.

Our DLine is easily the weakest Fulmer's had, or they all had the single worst games of their respective careers.

I'm sensing bitterness here.... :p

Where are all the Henderson's and Haynesworth's going? Obviously not to UT.

A bad d-line magnified by an incompetent Chavis.

You'd think after the first 2 or 3 quarters of trying to get pressure using only the 4 linemen not working, he might try something else.

Not Chavis.

not so much bitter as just trying to undercut what I see as an excuse for our pathetic defensive results. Longshore having all day to throw was as big a problem as poor tackling / poor player positioning.
When your defense surrenders 31 points in virtually two and a half quarters, there is clearly enough blame to shower on everyone. Sad beginning.
Get better? Sure. Enough to warrant high hopes? Eh...

Probably because our db's are just as bad. If you put those guys on an island against Cal's wr's they would get toasted. Get a clue.

Yes, because what we did was working MUCH better. :eek:lol:

I think our db's could handle coverage for a few blitzes here and there. I'd try letting out db's cover over doing the same crap that isn't working the entire game. How could it have been any worse?

I do not. Good luck letting Antonio Gaines go one-on-one with Jackson. That would be a great idea

At some point, they need to be coached. The recruiting rankings couldn't be that far off. Everyone misses on a big-time recruit every now and then, but at UT it seems like there are more great recruits who just don't develop properly. Could it be coaching? Absolutely, he*l yes it is

That's because you follow UT closer than other schools. I would imagine it is the same everywhere.
