A friend of mine and I were discussing lack of depth on OL an DL which has been an obvious concern for about 12 years. Yes, we are recruiting a ton of them this class. But, it sounds like we could use about at least 5 more on each side of the ball. Pruitt said UT only had 5/6 OL during this past spring. When Kennedy, Smith, and a couple of other OL got hurt this season. Pruitt basically had no choice on who would start. There weren't many left besides the true freshmen that probably weren't physically strong enough. Could we get about 5 PWOs for OL and DL? With what UT has went through on the lines of scrimmage for 12 years, it wouldn't hurt to have at least 10 PWOs or WOs on the line of scrimmage. Before people start bashing me, I did search and didn't see numbers. Maybe I didn't look in the right places.

We need to get creative to build depth, but the problem is that developing that many walkons takes away coaching and development of more promising recruits due to limitations on coach #s and practice time.

But yeah, maybe we scout the every farm, dive, and honk Tonk within a 12 hour radius for some big countries, fill’em with HGH and roids, and give the most promising handful scholarships after a year. Isn’t that what Nebraska used to do??

Not sure on the specific numbers, but I believe schools can have 85 scholarship players, and something like 100 total, give or take a few.

There are approximately 30-35 walk-ons on the team, with a handful being of the "preferred" variety. The deal seems to be that these kids get opportunities in the spring when there are injuries/low numbers. The part that I don't get, is that if some of these kids are more than capable, get opportunities, do well given those opportunities, and draw the praise of coaches during one on one meetings, then why the hell can they not get some reps or be considered as depth? Is it all a matter of the scarlet letter(s) PWO? Is it that the coaching staff would look weak as recruiters if a PWO showed out over scholarship players? If they truly want the best available on the field, then why limit you selection pool to a few that never get better during the year and don't give the effort?
