Or is anyone else getting tired of the "if" game. A few examples - UF would have won against UT "if" not for the bad call. UT would have beaten ND "if" Ainge didn't get hurt. Bama would have beaten LSU "if" not for the bad call in the endzone and they would be 10-0 "if" Brodie was healthy.
There are so many variables in a game that it's ridiculous to claim what would have happened. Bad calls are unfortunate and of all the bad calls, we probably benefitted the most in the UF game since it was so close to the end of the game. However, I am unwilling to concede that if the penalty was not assessed (yardage and time) that we still could not have won. Different patterns would have been run to adjust for the yardage. Would they have been successful? Who knows. Maybe we get a better punt return, maybe we block the punt. Maybe the punt is shanked, etc...
It's worse when there is a lot of time left. I refuse to get in the we would have beat ND "if" camp. We were leading at the time of the injury and had 1/2 of the game left. No excuses. It affected our options but didn't predetermine the outcome. Same with the UA/LSU game. Bama likely would have scored if the penalty is called but then what? So much of the game was left to play ANYTHING could have happened.
Single events do not predetermine the outcome of games. They can change the tone, momentum, and chances of events but do not guarantee them. This is one of the greatest things about college football - it's unpredictable nature.
Sorry for the rant, but this is one of the traits of fans that has been driving me nuts lately. I'll go lay down now
