is the man who follows J.Crompton at QB for the vols on campus yet????

My take is if he is it is definantly Coleman. Don't think Stephens has it. Maybe not even BJ. He has looked decent an CDC could mold him.

i dont think stephens is going to be a starter but who knows further down the line. As for Coleman, I don't like to really make predictions before they even play in games, but Cutcliffe seems to like him a lot and thats good enough for me.

It's a bit presumptious to assume that Crompton is guaranteed the starting job next year.

good point. although he should be the favorite as of right now (which means nothing), the qb race should be completely open next year.

Crompton looked okay as a RS Freshman last year. IMO, he has progressed even further from his play in the Spring game. He is the odds on favorite to get the job.
BJ Coleman lit it up in the Army All-american game. I think he is a bona fide SEC-caliber QB. Bet he redshirts.

Coleman wasnt an Army AA. He did go to a All-American game and did well but it wasnt against as good of competition.

Then it must have been the East meets west game. May not have been as great of competition but there were very good players on both sides. Darris Sawtelle played well in that game also.

Being from the Chattanooga area I have seen Coleman play and am VERY impressed with him. I also met him at last years UF game. He was so excited to be there. He is a VOL thru and thru. He is a very respecful young man and I thought he was gonna break my hand when he shook it. I have a feeling we will be very glad to see him wearing BIG ORANGE! Without any major injuries at QB, I too think he will red shirt this year.

Do you know what kind of competition they played last year? I am a Webbite, we used to play McCallie but we also used to play some of the public schools until Tenn split the private and public sport leagues up, mainly because of Brentwood. So, it was my Senior year the last time the two leagues mixed or has it changed again?

They play in Div II AAA. I guess Brentwood is the top. They beat them in the opener late with a long pass from BJ for a TD if I remember correctly. Brentwood then beat them in the playoffs like 34-31. McCallie was undef until that game beating the likes of Riverdale, Powell, Baylor, Alcoa, Tyner, MBA, Powell. Hope this helps.

Yeah it does, Seems like the public and private are playing again. At least in regular season. The split was not fair to most private schools who did not offer athletic scholarships anyway.

I am in the camp that thinks noone will follow JC... I don't think he'll be our starter. I am also from Chattanooga and have seen B.J. first hand, and IMO, he is better than JC NOW, just doesn't know the pb at this point.

I would bet almost any amount of money that it goes a little something like this:

2008: Crompton
2009: Crompton
2010: Coleman
2011: Coleman

you cant compare how a guy that played in high school did versus a guy who has been at Tennessee for 3 years now, especially if you didnt see Crompton in highschool. It'll be a interesting race for the starting job. Crompton may be able to do more since hes big and has decent speed but Coleman may be more solid in the pocket. We'll just have to seen next year. Hopefully none of them will be starting this year because i dont want to see Ainge go down.

Hey, I was not comparing. I was just curious about the competition level Coleman played at. I believe Crompton is the guy next year, unless he has a mental meltdown. In the pocket he is not anything less than anyone else when he is committed to being there. But, it would be nice to know we have a solid guy behind him in the wings.

Does Webb offer them? I don't think they do, so why do they play in the private league vs. teams like Baylor and McCallie, who do offer scholarships?

Webb did not when I was there. I graduated in 97' All privates at the time had to play in the new league it was an overkill for what had happened with teams like Brentwood. It has probably changed because the initial system was not very liked. There was always one guy in the school on a "financial" need scholarship. This guy could always play three sports at a high level. But, one guy did not make us very competitive. We had our first good football team my senior year and our baseball team was good at times. But, even when Chad was the QB we were not very good. But, I am out of the loop maybe they started offering scholarships if they are getting treated like all the others who do.
