If I am not mistaken, the search firm can contact the coaches during the season, just not the university itself, I think. If that were the case, then how did Clemson interview Oklahoma's DC for their job.I'm sure there is contact going on behind the scene(I hope so anyway). He can't openly talk to a curerently employed coaches untill the end of the regular season.
I heard he's waiting until the first of the year to start interviewing. He reportedly wants to take a very calm, patient, and deliberate approach to this next hire.
I, for one, think it shows his level-headedness and his ability to wisely distance a lot of the Fulmer-dismissal emotion from the hiring process.

I think it only relates to speaking to a coach for a lateral or lower position than currently holding. A DC to a head coach would be a step up and allowed. (Don't quote me on this, but I'm fairly certain that's how this rule works.) If you remember, Coach Cut interviewed with Ole Miss before the end of our season in 98.

I thought the arguement justifying why Hamilton fired Fulmer before season's end was so that he could get someone hired quickly.
No it was to keep CPF from getting booed at his last home game
That couldn't be further from the truth.
They'd been wanting to have a "Phil Fulmer Day" for a while now. And, with the way things were going, PF Day wasn't going to be as wildly celebrated amongst the fan base as they had hoped....so, they decided to fire him in order to reignite the fanbase's passion and support for Fulmer.
And, I think it's been a plan that's worked to perfection thus far.
You Hamilton fans change your justification with the weather don't you.
I said from day one of the firing that this would be a critical time for Hamilton and could be a speedway to his firing. He may not be on the speedway yet, but it does look like he's at least a little confused and considering getting on the entrance ramp to the speedway. He needs to come to his senses and take the other turn to getting a good hire so that he can get on a freeway to success instead.
Hamilton said he wanted to go ahead and announce CPF's resignation to "celebrate what the man has done for the University of Tennessee and use the Kentucky game as Phillip Fulmer Day."
