Is Chavis the new Randy Sanders?

Before the season started I mentioned that we might have to outscore our opponent as opposed to stopping them. If we keep tackling the way we did Saturday, that statement will hold true. Chavis is not a Randy Sanders. He just needs to get back to fundamentals.

Given that we all seem to pretty much agree that the Vols' defense is the neediest part of the team, I wonder what you guys think about Chavis's capacity to make adjustments? Clearly, we have a front-D that underachieved against Cal. Underachievement is always a coaching deficiency.

So to the heart of my question: Randy Sanders was the master of 'more-of-the-same.' Will Chavis be able to take this group of moderate to above-average defensive guys and inspire them to play above their heads, or are we in for a long season of living room damage when the Vols don't have the ball?

Bammer alert.

No Albert Haynesworth, John Henderson, Leonard Little, No Al Wilson, No Deion Grant etc. etc.

We have some young players who may rise to the level of the aforementioned. But our current starting D can't touch those guys. Is that coaching? I'm not sure, you be the judge.

chavis is not responsible for tackling, if they cannot tackle, they should have never been recruited, nor pursued. saturday will not be indicative of how the defense will play this year. they learned and you could almost see berry and the others get better as the game went on. we'll all be talking about how chavis got them stoked up for this week. but...gainseville is another story...johnny better work some magix

One of the biggest points of Fulmer fans is that we can't get rid of him because he brings in the talent like NO other coach could.

So now we hear we don't have talent or our guys just can't tackle(not just from you). While I don't believe that for a second, what's Phil been doing the past few years if our defensive downturn is due to lack of talent?

as much as we want to hate tva, rasputin actually has a very valid point here. how many "one times" does chavis get? The defense seems to be getting worse and worse over the years.

I have been a Chavis fan for sometime, but am getting to be less and less of one. We seem not to adjust well to the spread offense and misdirection (I don't know whether the latter is a lack of discipline on the part of the players or not, but my high school coach would have kicked our tails if we did that). I also cringe on 3rd and long situations, because it seems that the other team has us where they want us.:cray:

I have seen too many cases of that against Air Force and UF last year as well as other teams we have played that run the spread or a form of it.

Chavis's style of defense normally hasn't worked well against option teams. I don't like UT's chances in the Florida game.

I'm not going to say Chavis is a bad coach but I do think the college game has passed his style of defense. The spread offense is killing his usual scheme's and he doesn't seem to be able to find the answer for it. I don't pretend to know how to deal with it but surely there's film out there of teams that defend it well that we should be looking at and be utilizing some of the things that work.

Part two what the heck happened to our special teams you can't convince me that we don't have enough fast players who can tackle a return man.

Both Chavis and Fulmer are getting worse. We have become a mediocre SEC team and they dont even seem to care.
