If you want to consider taking it back and getting a non-I-Pod MP3 player, I recommend Rhapsody's service. I think it costs about $13 per month. For that flat rate, download all the tracks you want to your player, or stream them on your PC. Compatible with most MP3 players other than I-Pod. Completely legal.

Nice to be able to download an entire album and if I don't like it, I can delete it without having wasted $.99 per song.

I thought about Rapsody, I learned once you discontinue service with them, you lose all your songs you have stored on your computer. I dont know how you would lose them off your MP-3 player though.

There's a big difference. Some sites post songs from bands that have agreed to allow free distribution of their material. The site I posted is one such site.

Others like Limewire are simply conduits for searching for shared music files. A great deal of this sharing is illegal. In the end, it is the artists' choice as to whether or not Internet sharing is okay.

Actually there isn't much a difference because the way I do it, is I do a specific search and it pulls up whatever artist I want and if they are available it pulls up every site that has a mp3 song available by that artist, it does not give me plenty of other sites by the artist, it specifically gives me songs by those artists. These sites are normally what the average person is putting online and making available.

In the end, if you get it online, if you get it through Limewire, if you get it through your friends ipod or mp3 player, etc it is all FREE, regardless of how you get it, you get the same result in the end $0.00.

just curious, what kind of search do you do? like, search "artist name" free mp3?

the point though is unless the artist has agreed to share his /her music for free, it's stealing.

And probably the majority of these sites aren't approved by the artists, just as limewire isn't, nor would they probably okay me from taking it from my friend. If you call that stealing, get over it, millions of people are doing it, and there isn't much you or the little guys can do as everyone is here to help everyone out, so the free stuff is going to continue.

You have to download firefox--its another client like internet explorer. Then you bookmark this http address and from that you just search for the artist or song you want. I have the address booked at home when I return from the holidays if you want it.

just because millions are doing it doesn't make it right. Stealing is stealing.

You do lose them if you let your subscription lapse. The way it works is you have to periodically synch your MP3 player to renew the licenses. I'm not sure how often, maybe every 30 days.

If you want to keep a song permanently, you can purchase it through Rhapsody, and I think the cost is $0.99.

There is a difference in degree. Burning a disk for your friend is technically stealing but it is small potatoes compared to peer-to-peer sharing activities such as Limeware, etc.

Hard to say if the social norm of making tapes, (now burning CDs) for friends was tacitly agreed to by all in the music industry. However, it's clear that high volume file sharing is not.

As to this all being free - there is the old economic adage TINSTAAFL (there is no such thing as a free lunch). Someone is paying (or losing money) somewhere in this system. It exemplifies another old economic problem - the free rider problem. People buying music begin to subsidize those that are stealing it by baring the brunt of the costs.

The RIAA took the wrong approach to the digital age but there must be some way for the artists and all those involved in production to get paid for their efforts.
