Interesting take on Butch Jones

This is incorrect

It was the surreal realization that if a kicker tried to do that exact same thing 100 times, odds are he wouldn’t be able to replicate it.

All these blogs are doing is rearranging the same points. There's nothing new to write

"Forward Progress Halted", it is far worse than halted. It is in reverse. Lack of depth and diminished recruiting project a future decline.

After finishing the entire article, I'll give some cliffs:

* This season hurt

* We're in between ADs

* Butch is here to stay, for too many reasons, so buckle up

* The author hasn't done much research on coaching staffs

* We won't know the fallout from this season until February, then we can decide how bad it REALLY was

I don't agree with a lot of their points that they tried to make about moving on. This was as good as it got for Jones. If you know you're going to make a change, there's no point in waiting.

I fear the recruiting will take a hit--the sunshine pumpers will be happy with a top 25 class and say Lyle hit it out of the park.

I fear that our new QB will not be an Eason or Bentley...I also fear for his life as he will not have any blocking.

I fear our defense will continue to be a minor annoyance only to opposing offenses.

I fear we are stuck with Lyle for at least 1 more season.

That and EVERYONE outside of the program will be off the hype train.

This year was a "wait-and-see" year for most of the media and recruits. The media shapes how the nation views the program, and the recruits build the program. Without positive outlook from either, it's not looking good.

At the very minimum, Butch will have to start over again and approach 2017 the way he approached 2015 - "This is a year to lay the groundwork and expectations for 2018."

It is funny how we can complete a rebuild, only supposed to be good for 1 year, then have to wait 2 years on another rebuild. It doesn't seem to work that way at other schools.

I enjoy seeing all the takes to devalue Butch or to justify him as a the Head Coach.

- Injuries
- Players fumbled and missed tackles, not Butch
- Coach Speak, Champions of Life, F them all
- Win total
- good recruiting
- Offensive problems
- Defensive problems
- position coaches
- Historical aspects of the program
- comparison to other coaches
- former player views

and on and on and on...

to me it all comes down to one simple fact: We are a poorly coached football team. Butch's main responsibility it to field a competitive, disciplined fundamentally sound football team. He has not done that.

If people think Butch Jones is a good coach, all I have to say to that is just look at what James Franklin inherited in Penn State (a complete dumpster fire w/ only probably 60 scholly players) and in his 3rd year, he is competing for a BIG 10 Championship in the hardest division in the BIG 10 (comparable to the SEC West)............. Butch did not inherit a situation as bad as Franklin did (Im pretty sure) but Butch made it out to be a lot worse than what it was..........keep in mind Butch inherited 4 NFL Offensive Linemen and still could not do nothing..........

A really talented team that should have been in the playoffs, that was poorly coached from start to finish.

Tennessee is lucky to be at 8-4 right now.

The bottom line is we lost to SC and Vandy. They are very bad teams that shouldn't even be in the SEC. A win is a win and a loss is a loss, but Vandy and SC are jokes and it took 3 bad turnovers for SC to barely win and as for Vandy I don't care if they beat Ga and Ole Miss they are still bottom feeders.

Get it together Butch!

Go Vols!

I agree. There are two words to judge a program in year 4 by: "Trending Up?"

And the answer here is not just "no", it's "trending down, actually". Which presumably means things have peaked.

The question about whether Butch will make it here from now on is this:

"Is he capable of, or likely to, honestly evaluate the entire program from top to bottom and make all necessary changes to trend it back up?"

His stubbornness, tone deafness, and demeanor so far have the fan base rightfully saying NO. He could change that, but ONLY he can change it. And so far he's shown no inclination to do it.

He's stubborn about his offense, his personnel decisions, game management, so on - everywhere he needs to be flexible his stubbornness makes him overly rigid. Rigidity leads to tension which leads to breaks.

He could turn perception around with one single, brief, honest, candid press conference addressing the issues and affirming his commitment to turning over every rock in search of championships.

The sunshine pumpers won't be happy with a top 25 class - but it will for sure, absolutely be a better class than if he left and we had to scramble to hire someone without an AD in place.

Worst things to fear right now - fire and tornadoes are at the top of my list. Football is NOT life.

seriously.....

(except the odd case of a Heisman QB just destroying teams in his Junior or Senior year before bouncing, always an exception to a rule)
