As of Nov 8, Tennessee ranks #8 in the nation (120 FBS teams) in total defense (yards/game)...

1. USC 206.4
2. TCU 220.0
3. S Carolina 256.5
4. Alabama 264.5
5. Florida St 265.6
6. Penn St 266.5
7. Ohio St 269.8
8. Tennessee 269.8

Tennessee also is tied for fourth in the nation in fewest yards per play given up by the defense...

1. USC 3.3
2. TCU 3.8
3. Boise St 4.1
4. S Carolina 4.2
4. Alabama 4.2
4. Penn St 4.2
4. Tennessee 4.2

But oddly enough, Tennessee is dead last in the entire nation (all 120 FBS teams) in fumble recoveries... only 2 in 10 games (and 107th in forced fumbles with only 5 forced fumbles).

But Eric Berry still leads the nation (along with 5 others) for interceptions with 6 and stands alone with the most interception return yardage with 220.

This week Tennessee has the #8 defense in the country with the #117 offense. The offense gives the defense no chance, but they seem to hang in there.

We are #103 in time of possession. The D gets lots of snaps. I don't think most of those other teams are as bad as we are in TOP.

Despite the nega-vols here, I think Chavis as done well.

Chavis' penchant for giving up more 3rd and 8 or longer first downs is part of the reason the defense is on the field for long stretches.

What is ironic is that Tenn has played two of the top 7 teams. Bama and SCar.
Because of Tennessee's pitiful excuse of an offense, their Defensive stats no doubt improved. Partially because they are good defenses, but also partially because Tenn Sucks.

The Tenn Offense is causing the Tenn Defense to drop in rankings. How sad is that.

Interestingly enough the offensive stats are on the complete opposite end of the spectrum.

Defense has probably played well enough to put the team in the ball park of 2 or 3 losses. Still think you lose to FL, GA, AL with a decent offense, but you might pull out an upset over one of them.

Overall, this is just not a good football team. Which makes the season all the more sickening because the coaches led us all to believe that this team was SEC Champ. material. Makes you wonder how that was even remotely imagined, now :ermm:   :search: :hmm:

Yep, Tennessee ranks #68 on defense in giving up 3rd-down conversions. That makes for very odd corresponding statistics... ranking near the top in giving up fewest yard/game and yard/play but not getting it done on 3rd downs.

Actually our anemic offense may be helping the defense stat-wise(yds/gm). Inability to move the ball on offense results in better field position for the opposing team which leads to fewer yards possible/drive.

I wonder if we have 3-4 wins with a offense that ranked #50??

Strange pairing of statistics.

3Q defense was good... forced 3 punts and a FG (2 of which were 3-and-out). But that 4Q... gave up 2 TD drives (80 & 71 yds each).

defense is not good as advertised. they have been on a short field all season long which leads to touchdown drives of 35 yards or less. it has been bend but dont break all year. still can not get off the field on 3rd down, still getting very lil pressure on qb, and when we do, we give up contain and they still get positive yards. we are a good defense, not dominant or great by any stretch. the sec is terrible on offense this year and we have been fortunate to play very weak offenses this year. we even caught florida before they found their rythym

Tenn is ranked 69th in 3rd down conversion allowed.
49th 4th down conversion defense.
35th in Red Zone defense.

If we balanced out our offensive possession with the other team then most likely our Defensive stats would be better. Less time on the field means less yards that can be put against you. You also have to factor in that we let the other team score points when our defense isn't even on the field.

As frustrating as our offense is, you have to give our D credit. I just wish we could cause more turnovers and make more stops on 3rd down.

Another point to factor in- Tenn has only played against 3 offenses ranked in the Top 50 Scoring.

#7 Florida
#28 Georgia
#31 Alabama
#60 N Illinois
#70 SCarolina
#82 UAB
#102 Auburn
#105 UCLA
#114 Miss St
#119 Wyoming

#59 Alabama
#85 N Illinois

#100 Auburn
#106 Miss St
#108 UCLA
#112 Wyoming

Not exactly powerhouse offenses we've been playing which makes that 3-7 record that much more impressive.

The sad part is if the D gives up a touchdown and the opposing team can get a turnover and run it back we are done. It is sad when a offense cannot seem to score 14 pts, lead the SEC in 3 and out series and force a defense to be on the field 2/3 of a game. Call it poor defense for not getting off the field sooner but I also feel the defense is built for speed and pressuring QB's when we have a lead. In years past when we scored 30 pts a game with the exception of Florida we had a fairly high winning percentage. Could UT have a better defense with a new coach? possible..Is there alot of teams in the country that would like to have our defense? probably..TT with our defense would look more like Florida. Whenever an offense jumps on a team the defense tends to play harder.

How many non offensive TD's have we given up this year? This is what I can remember off the top of my head; Blocked punt-UCLA, punt return-Fla,fumble-Aub,INT-USCe,INT-wyoming. This isn't counting good field position we give the other team off of poor punt coverage and TO(i.e Wyoming stating on the 4 yd line).
