To expand on this further-
Tennessee was 3rd in the SEC in scoring defense:
1 Florida 12.9 ppg
2 Alabama 14.3 ppg
3 Tennessee 16.8 ppg

But 1st in total defense:
Name G Rush Pass Plays Total Yards/Play Yards/G
1 Tennessee 12 1237 1925 776 3162 4.1 263.5
1 Alabama 14 1038 2651 858 3689 4.3 263.5
3 Florida 14 1476 2518 896 3994 4.5 285.3

You often hear that scoring defense is the most important stat, but if your team turns over the ball on your own 20 and you hold the other team to a FG, that's really the best that you can hope for. (You can't COUNT on your defense getting a turnover here)

Tennessee allowed 20 TDs on the year, while Florida allowed 21, and Bama allowed 25. Tennessee allowed 21 FGs, Florida allowed 12 and Bama allowed 9. This coupled with the low yardage average by Tennessee tells you that they often had to defend a short field and were pretty successful at it.

Here's hoping the Vols can once again play 7 or 8 offenses that were just as bad as their own offense was last year.

Also, original poster guy failed to mention that the 2008 defense didn't allow a single play of over 37 yards. Griff would be disappointed in that effort.

I hope the defense is up to the challenge again because they are going to see a lot of playing time this year too.

Yea, but none longer than 37 yards...

That makes me wonder how many plays we gave up between 20 and 37 yards.

I think the biggest difference in this year's defense will be forced fumbles. We were 117th last year with 3 forced fumbles. Look for that number increase quite a bit this year with how much the coaches stress forcing turnovers

Our d was respectable, but couldn't pressure and was embarrassing on 3rd down. Any decent O, and we only faced 2, had its way with us.

Yeah but Chavis, slade and the rest of the defensive unit were still awful coaches, ha. Here we are praising the fact that our defense did not give up big plays but then ridiculing Chavis and slade for having our secondary play off the wife receivers. Something wrong with this rationale.

When you're giving receivers 10 yard cushions on 3rd and 8, something's wrong with that logic. Opponents rarely had to throw deep against us because they knew they would get a first down on intermediate routes. That was definitely a reason why the longest play against us was 37 yards.

In case you didn't notice, we were 10th in the SEC in opponents' 3rd down conversion percentage.

Also, 6 of our opponents last year were in the bottom 20 in the nation in total offense. When we played teams that had even a decent offense, we got methodically carved up. Matthew Stafford put up career-high numbers against us last year. Also, did you forget when we made Kevin Craft look like a Heisman contender in the 2nd half of the UCLA game?

Bama and Florida also played 2 extra games. Florida had 1 game against the best offensive team in the country, and Bama left 30+ available for Utah in the Sugar Bowl. Comparing our total numbers and theirs is not fair. The fact that Florida only allowed 1 more TD in 14 games is impressive.

The Auburn first down that ended the game, Willingham was about 8 yards off of the receiver on 3rd and 4-5ish..
