Ryan Callahan. Again, UT ground game gets nowhere vs. Florida - Nashville, Tennessee - Sunday, 09/16/07 - Tennessean.com

DAVID CUTCLIFFE
"We just didn't get them blocked," UT offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe said. "I've got to look at that — look at the scheme, look at where we were. We felt like we had a good plan going in. They pressured it a little bit but we still had opportunities.

JOSH MCNEIL
"To start the game, they were doing some things that just really hurt the run game," UT center Josh McNeil said. "Twisting, moving — they were doing a whole lot of things that really upset our run game. We didn't execute. They did their job, and we didn't."

RAMONE FOSTER
"We were planning on running the ball today," UT offensive tackle Ramon Foster said. "Florida was just really good at stopping the run.

These are the types of comments that are so common from our camp after we play "surprisingly poorly." Cutcliife seemed surprised by what Florida did. McNeil attributed our lack of a ground game to Florida's scheme.

That's sort of been my frustration with our OL and team in particular over the years. It doesn't matter how good your players are when they don't who to block, or if they're at a disadvantage because of schemes. Moreover, they did nothing to correct it over the course of 4 quarters.

A thought worth repeating. When you no longer have the horses to line up and blow people off of the line, a dramatic change in scheme is the only hope to stay competitive.

Cut can keep up with the passing game against anyone, but obviously can't coach the run. That used to be Fulmer's specialty.

Our OL and DL coaching is terrible. The players are nowhere near what we used to produce. Neither are the RB's.

thats the problem we want to be an old fashion run it down your throat kind of team and we don't recruit those types of players, we arent physical enough on the line, therefor we try to use a lot of play action passes and when you don't have a run game the deffense doesnt respect the play fake. I'm not saying i want us to play that kind of football but if thats how the coaches want to play you have to recruit those kind of players and push people around and we dont do that.

Ummm...there are numerous teams out there who can go in at half time or even earlier and adjust. From the get-go we were made one dimensional. The inability to adapt leads me to seriously question either the caliber of our players and/or the coaches to make the needed changes rapidly. Are we honestly THAT single focused that our team cannot adjust or play other schemes?

You have to spread the field and get better running lanes (like WV). You can't just line up and run the ball up the gut anymore. Nobody hardly does that, not even Nebraska. The days of "Tennessee football" the way most of us remembered it are gone. The spread is one of the few ways left that can get the type of gains you need on the ground.

Auburn is finding out what it's like without Cadillac and Brown. They were the last team to really be able to run the traditional SEC running game. Even Arkansas/Nutt have wised up with McFadden/Jones.
