So, this article is from a WVU website but I thought it may be interesting to some of you all as well.

By the numbers: WVU vs. Tennessee

Some things that stood out to me:

1. Under Holgorsen, WVU is 17-26 when the opponent scores first and 42-11 when we score first. So it's real important for you all to get on the board first if you want a chance.

2. You all have won 9 consecutive season openers. Impressive!

3. You all only had 11 total passing TDs last year, that's wild to me. For comparison, Grier had 10 TD passes of 50 or more yards last year.

The majority of the rest of the numbers in that article are WVU related but it's still worth a read if you want to learn more about us.

It’s from when we played in the Battle of Bristol, one of our players (cannot remember who at the moment) yelled out to the camera as they were filing onto the field

“We’re going to whip their f$&@ing a$$es!”

So now it’s become a trademark

Woo-Hoo!!! The Vols are one of approximately 127 Division 1 undefeated football teams. Who would have thought that would be the case at this stage of the season. GBO!

No disrespect to you. You've been a quality poster, but these stat stories are nothing but lazy click bait.

1. So they're saying WVU wins a lot when they score first? Well, since the better team is a lot more likely to win, it sure makes a lot of sense that the better team is more likely to score first. I'd bet most teams that have won a lot in recent years have very similar stats. It's the outlier that would be interesting. Not the norm.

2. 2009 - Western Kentucky
2010 - Tennessee Martin
2012 - N.C. State (sort of a real team)
2013 - Austin Peay
2014 - Utah State
2015 - Bowling Green
2016 - Appalachian State
2017 - Georgia Tech

So, it isn't really that impressive. Most of those games were against blood letters showing up to get their athletic department funded.

3. We sucked last year. We sucked so bad that the coach got fired, along with all the assistants and ultimately the AD. There's not one holdover from the past regime. They even fired the team doctors. Last year has absolutely nothing to do with how well this year's team does or does not play.

No disrespect taken. I personally see articles like this as more of random trivia that I wouldn't have otherwise known instead of click bait. Click bait in my opinion is a misleading title for the content that the article is talking about. The title for that article is pretty fair for what it talks about. I find a lot of the stats in the article interesting, for example the four sets of high school teammates playing against each other.

As for your other comments,

1. You're probably right about other teams having similar streaks but the huge difference is what surprised me. Those records would make me think its better to take the ball if you win the toss instead of defer to the second half because its more important to score first. I've always thought that defering was the better strategy before reading that.

2. I wasn't aware of the opponents. One thing you have to give Holgorsen credit for is that he schedules P5 teams to start the year off. I guess I'm a little biased in that regard for thinking other teams do the same.

3. I truly didn't understand how bad you all were last year. I have a much better understanding now why y'all are so excited about the new coaching staff.

You still discount UT's talent....

That said, I wouldn't expect last year's UT team to show up on the field tomorrow if I were you. Holgorsen doesn't. Your bigger concern is that your players will.

Nine wins isn't all that impressive. GT and NCSU were the only two P5 teams out of those 9. Neither was extraordinarily talented or good.

Should have gone a level deeper on the TD passes. UT's OL was a game of musical chairs that ended up with guys playing the late games like Vandy who shouldn't have played for two more years... if ever. Some of those guys they played out of necessity are scout team quality players. If you can't pass protect... you can't pass.... or keep QB's healthy. The original starter Dormady ended his season with shoulder surgery after taking a beating. Guarantano missed games as well.

The problem for someone like me in discussing this with you though is that we have no starting reference point. We know UT has some talented OL's. We know Guarantano can throw the ball well. We know UT has some quality RB's. We know the WR's have talent and that two of them have more than proven it. But pointing to last year is meaningless to prove they're bad... just as meaningless as pointing to two years ago to prove they're good..

If I were WVU's staff (obviously I'm not) I would probably go back to Helton's days at WKU to get my clues. Probably more so than USC.

Thanks for posting. I think we are all just totally ready for this damn game to happen already lol. Lets Go Big Orange and may WVU go 11-1.

I don’t care who scores first, second or third, we have a very good chance of beating a soft, pretty average WVa team.

SEC schools don't have to. If you are in the Big 12 and want to be in the national championship discussion at the end of the year, you better either run the table or have a win against a quality OOC opponent. In the SEC, the conference schedule is all your resume needs. May not always be that way, but it is these days.
