While doing my morning reading, I caught this at the end of a short bit about Lofton not being ready...

Pearl wants the Vols to shoot better from outside to compensate for their lack of size and inside strength.

Howell, Dane Bradshaw and Josh Tabb led Tennessee with four rebounds apiece against the Wildcats, who outboarded the Vols 42-27. UT post players Wayne Chism, Duke Crews and Ryan Childress combined for 11 points and seven rebounds after totaling only seven points and 11 rebounds against Ole Miss.

Aside from JaJuan Smith’s five 3-pointers, the Vols were 3-of-16 from outside the arc Sunday.

"That’s just not enough," Pearl said, "because we’re not all of a sudden going to be become a power inside offensive team."

He said he doesn’t mind the 6-foot-9 Chism spotting up for 3s, as long as "he takes good, open shots." Chism was 1-of-4 from long distance against Kentucky and is 13-of-46 for the season.

I called this interesting in the threadline because I see a great many posts around here bemoaning the number of 3pt attempts, and that certain players, like Chism, are taking them at all.

It seems clear from this that Pearl still has the 'green light' on to shoot threes. It also seems clear that he does not expect anything impressively different from his inside game than he is getting right now.

Maybe I'm reading too much into a few sentences, but this sounds a bit like an admission that the vols will either hit a bunch more 3s, or die the same deaths as the past week...

Seriously, when was the last time Chism made a 3? I remember the big 3 he made in OT against Texas, but he's been killing us with bad 3s ever since.

what sucks about chism shooting 3's is that he is usually the only guy big enough to box out and rebound the misses, and he's not under the basket when he shoots 'em.

Yall remember when Major would think he was Kevin Garnett and shoot a wide open shot from just inside the 3 point line. That's what Chism's 3 point shooting reminds me of. It's great when he hits, but it's so rare.
