In response to a fan's comment "CU will trash Michigan," Burns replied, "Doubtful. That boat sailed a few years ago when Butch Jones changed his mind and took the Tennessee job."

Obviously a high opinion of Butch and what Burns thinks he might have accomplished had he taken the Colorado job, instead of coming to Tennessee.

Lol yes when they were one of the top programs at the time and with ND. I was very young but I remember

Go back and do some reading on how they got all those athletes from CA to come out to the Rocky Mountains...makes Baylor look like middle school.

I have never looked into it or really heard anything about it. Now that you have mentioned it I'll check it out.

It still seems strange to me that Butch was ready to leave Cincy for Colorado or even Purdue. He could have stuck around Cincy for another year or two and had a shot at other high-profile jobs. Hell, he may have ended up getting hired at Florida with a couple more 10 win seasons with the Bearcats.

Yeah, Really like 25.

They had some really solid teams. For kicks I looked up their rosters and was remind of guys like: Eric Bienemy, Darian Hagan, Charles Johnson, Rashaan Salaam, Michael Westbrook, Kordell Stewart, etc. And it seems like there were several others I'm forgetting.

Friend of mine from CA was on the CO team that year. Tore his shoulder up early in camp and couldn't travel to the game. Said the team came back saying they'd never been hit so hard in their life.

it was a slug fest. i forget who the RB was, i wanna say it was chuck webb or reggie cobb, but if htey would have just run out of bounds a second earlier....we might could have kicked a GW fg in that game.

we tied Auburn that year too, lost to Bama & ND....beat the snot out of FL. start of a really good decade for us. that was a great team that just fell a tad short.

I remember back in the day when Colorado was playing really well
I do as well. The deal for Colorado is they have to keep all in state players and recruit California well. Once their Cali pipeline got broke they went downhill.

I believe if Chuck Webb had fallen down a couple of seconds earlier, the clock would have stopped for the first down and we could've kicked the FG.

Same season that Chuck got injured trying to make something out of nothing against Pacific. Broke my heart.

The team that we tied in 1990 had the best LB corps in the country. Alfred Williams won the 1990 Butkus Award and they also had Chad Brown and Kanavis McGhee. They all went on to lengthy NFL careers. Andy Kelly, Chuck Webb, Carl Pickens and Alvin Harper wore them out in the 2nd half though. We should have gone for two with the game at 31-30. Webb could have walked it in backwards at that point.

And according to stories that Butch has told, he had already turned down Colorado before accepting the Tennessee job. If we hadn't offered, I think he would have stayed at Cincinnati another year... or at least that's what he says.
