If Aguilar is the starter and with a 5 star recruit inbound, I would expect both Merk and GMac to be gone in the first portal window. And I don’t think we can get anyone out of the portal with zero prospect of playing time. If those two guys sit through 2025 as backups, I think they will have done all we can ask of them. We could end up with no QB depth in 2026.

Good points. Heup may see this and decide to roll with either Merk or GMac this fall. The other one will leave and Faizon may stay for a year playing behind the starter. Or he may not. In this day and age, “QB depth” may mean we have two scholarship QBs on the team. Three would mean we have a deep bench. Not too many kids are gonna hang around these days for a definite “maybe” or a “chance to win the job.”Congratulations NCAA for screwing up the game we love.

I’ve always thought this is one of the most challenging things to measure because many HS QB’s are never forced to do it.
Yup, I am pretty sure Heup thought Nico could do it; but never did click. There is just something extra needed due to the absolute speed you encounter at the college level

I get the sentiment. The fear is that all the backups transfer and were left high and dry for depth. Look at the big picture like this ... "Where will either go where they will start"? There is a finite number of potential schools and faaarrr more QBs wanting to start at those schools. Most QBs are gon have to pay there dues in order to be the man. At the end of the day, it all shakes out about the same.

Look at Hendon Hooker, was only one play, one injury to go from backup to starter & you see how that came out. And that extra year behind Hooker I think helped Milton. Is it Football Time in Tennessee yet?????? I'm ready!

Yall do understand both of the QBs came into the year not expecting to start right? Merk they would've already transferred if that was the stipulations. If Aguilar starts, he's gone next year anyway. So they would be in the same position, if not better than when Nico was here.
Not necessarily. True athletes have the mindset that I’m going to give the coaches a reason to want me on the field.

Exactly. Dobbs played for a idiot
Butch was not ready for this level of HC. Mike DeBord was not an idiot and did a lot to refine Dobbs' decision-making. Debord took a very great, but raw, talent and made him much more dangerous.

Butch could have made it here if he recruited SEC-caliber OLine. He is neither the 1st nor the last to lose his job over OLine quality. Dooley left him a good starting 5, but Butch let the talent level just drain down to a step below mediocrity. His magic blocking scheme didn't work with 3-star talent in the SEC. That's when injuries became one of our downfalls.

It seems only Tennessee can find a way to keep 5 star freshmen off the field for no more reason than they're freshmen especially if they're a QB. Meanwhile our opponents routinely start freshmen and some of them beat us.

Literally every team with a returning starter or highly ranked recruit coming in has to worry about transfers and depth. We are no different except we have higher ranked players than most. I’m sure Merck or GMac may look around but it probably will be after next years competition plays out.
Sure but blaming it on getting Aguilar is flawed logic

Remember Milton was a starter until he wasn’t. Coaches can’t tell until they see it in a real game.
The difference is Aguilar has more experience in games. Our incoming freshmen (Frazier?) will likely be redshirted next year. Merk and Gmac will be backups and whoever doesn’t get the first to go in this season will probably start looking
