Even at Central Michigan, that perpetual MAC upstart, the then-head coach DeBord saw in Jones an attention to detail that he knew would empower his relentless assistant to one day helm his own college program.

“I think back when we were working together. He was always very detailed, always very passionate and hard-working, but he was, also, I saw that he was very organized,” DeBord, now the Vols' offensive coordinator, told 247Sports. “He was taking notes on everything, I’m sure it was spiral notebooks and all that.

“And I'm sure when he was sitting there taking notes he was thinking, 'When I do this some day, I'm going to take this. Or I might not do that.' He really has built himself for this.”

...“I was just thinking this is a good team win for us, but this is just the beginning,” Barnett shared with 247Sports of his thoughts leaving Neyland Stadium last week. “It wasn't no shock to me that we beat (Florida). I don't think it was a shock to nobody on our team. I just kept thinking, 'This is the start of our journey.'”

Really good article. Makes you re-think a little when you see a commit that doesn't have the highest star rating.

Or when we don't have arrest records
Of when we don't have academic issues
Or when we have a team that plays hard for 60 min
Or when we replace staff in order to correct issues
Or when our coach repeats the same message to the media

It's almost like - ya know what - that Coach Jones can build a program. Maybe we ought to get behind him and quit calling for his head halfway through each game.

Maybe the last brick is having a fanbase who fully supports the coach. Not just when the scoreboard lights up. Or based on how many stars a player is ranked.

Here's hoping after Florida we see that and show a little grit

Butch Jones has turned in one of if not the best rebuilding jobs in college football in the 21st Century. The chaos he inherited throughout the program with the Kiffin fiasco followed by Dooley was unprecedented. Take a look at the destruction Kiffin did in one year. Gutted a decent Fulmer recruiting class, Tajh Boyd, Petty and others then signed a highly rated on paper class of thugs. Ran off existing players which damaged depth and left Dooley with a complete dumpster fire. Butch had the detail plan and it has worked brilliantly to turnover the roster and bring the vols out of the sec East cellar. In UT program history the only similar turnaround by a coach is Doug Dickey. Majors led a resurgence but it took many years longer than Butch Jones. It is time to recognize the quality work Butch and his entire staff have done.

Oh yeah - kind of remember that when Butch Jones was hired - no major head coaches and few head coaches at any level would touch the Tennessee job. Dooley? Seriously? That was the shape the program was in. Dave Hart hired the right man and Butch has fully earned every bit of success that comes to him.

As far as I'm concerned. Beating Florida appeased me. I fully trust and back CBJ 100%. Win or lose. No matter what. Unless he implodes (which) he won't. It's ballsy Butch we are talking about.

spot on man! people do forget that no one would touch this job with a stick. that was very telling and i think a lot of fans couldn't swallow that pill at the time. looking back now, people have to see that there writing on the wall. ut football was in dire straits and needed a complete overhaul staff. roster, and all.

“Because that’s what you need on your roster. So you’re trying to find, it’s competitiveness, toughness, mental and physical, and you really have to love football. You have to crave it.

“I think those three (physical) things are easy to find, but character isn’t always there. We want good kids, high-character kids. And then do they have those three things.”

Best recruiting/coaching philosophy in college football for sustained success...
