Independence isn't free -- just ask Notre Dame

Decent read, but flawed.

In terms of sheer football success, ND still stands a much better chance for turnaround as an independent than in the Big Ten. Reason being is that ND basically needs to reach nine, maybe ten wins in order to make a BCS game. And as many patsies as the Big Ten has, ND's schedule has more. Any moderately talented team should be able to cruise to at least six wins a year given ND's schedule. Get a decent coach and maybe do so much as to pull top 25 classes more years than not? Getting closer. Pray to touchdown Jesus and pull a couple wins out of your rear-end? Boom, nine wins, BCS game.

And in the end, and I had to come around on this... Notre Dame is still a monster recruiter away from becoming Notre Dame again. Assuming Comcast doesn't move ND's home games to Versus, being the only team in the NCAA with guaranteed weekly nationally broadcast home games? Yeah, kind of a recruiting boon.

Only question left is money. But from a purely football standpoint? You've have to call ND idiotic to join the Big Ten (even though I really want them to so they'd be put on their place by replicating roughly the same level of success as Northwestern or Indiana).

Nice read but ND pretty much has it made. I'd love to see them go to the Big-10 but they can achieve the same results as an Indy team.

Yeah let them go to the big ten so they can prove they still cant win against mediocre football teams

ND has a losing record against Michigan and has lost 9 of the last 12 against Michigan State. They wouldn't be anything special in the Big 10.

Notre Dame will die on the vine as an independent, and that's okay with me.

Given the TV dollars available for just about every other BCS conference, Notre Dame is not in a financially advantageous position anymore. They also can't play the "every game is on TV" card. Everyone has cable, and between ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Classic, CBS College Sports, Versus and the Fox Channels, every major program is on TV each week....and if you miss the game, chances are it will be replayed at least twice the following week.

It's a much tougher rebuilding job than most realize, their facilities are garbage, and other than Ohio State, most of the elite national programs are located in warmer climates. Their endowment is still ridiculous, but you have to wonder just how big of an emphasis the school will place on football going forward. Stanford has a ridiculous endowment too.

I think Notre Dame is making a big mistake by remaining indy, and they are hypocrites for siphoning off the Big East's basketball revenue. They already play Purdue, Michigan and Michigan State every year, and until the NCAA grows a pair and drops the hammer on Southern Cal (unlikely), Notre Dame won't beat the Trojans consistently anytime soon.

I think that ND is signing their own death warrant.

Their isn't an Independent Champion, much less an Independent Championship Game so there's really no way to judge ND's program other than if they made it to a BCS game or not. And if every program's only measuring stick was a BCS game or not then the coaching turnover would be 30 times more ridiculous than it already is.

As ND fans and administration see things now, a ND team that doesn't make it to a BCS game is a failure.

Making a BCS game and being taken seriously when you get there are two completely different animals. Nobody takes Ohio State seriously anymore, and their program is at a different level than Notre Dame.

I think Notre Dame is cool with getting most favored nation status with respect to BCS consideration, deserved or not. It's just another cash grab for them. Actually winning a BCS bowl would be gravy.

Getting Notre Dame to the point where they're actually competitive once they get to a BCS bowl is a tougher task than anyone realizes.
