Literally came across this thread just now....
I can't speak for the entire fan base but I can definitely speak for myself...who ever the guy was that said 18-22 year old kids should be able to handle public criticism better from thousands upon thousands of fans, you REALLY need to get a grip.
My 16 year old nephew is as tough a kid I know, loosing your dad at 14 will do that to a kid. He's the starting QB for a small town HS east of Nashville. The kind of small town that everybody knows everybody. There's apparently some website (Topix?) that people get on for every little city in America and gossip like school girls over every little thing going on in town...and, as HS football is king in the south, it gets discussed quite a bit.
Needless to say, his name came up. I don't know, nor do I care to know (because I'd probably want to kill some people) what was said about him but it was apparently COMPLETELY made up b.s. by someone...with little to no life. His Mom (my sis-n-law) was livid at what ever it was b/c my nephew (who took it relatively well) could not understand why someone would make up something so completely far-fetched.
We're talking about a town of MAYBE 10,000--that's 1/10 Neyland...and yes, that's just a microcosm of what is discussed on VN everyday but some how people think that just b/c they're a member of a message board, they're hiding behind a computer screen, and they happen to be a fan of a team--THAT gives them a right to criticize players on a personal level.
I don't have a problem getting angry at a player in the heat of the moment, or questioning whether a player has enough talent to start, or debating the skill level of players...that's all well and good...but PERSONAL attacks. Nuh uh. I don't get that at all.
Never have. Never will.
Being UT alum who shelled out thousands of $$$ on my education and football games, I feel some sort of ownership to this team...but I've never felt that, b/c of that, I have a true sense of what goes on in these kid's heads. These kids are here to play football. YES, it comes with a HUGE amount of publicity, national exposure, and admiration but that NEVER gives a fan the right to attack a player or outright make **** up.
ok. /rant. Flame away....
