In my lifetime UT has been Blessed by GREAT running backs - Who is your favorite?

Then you obviously never saw Webb. This was when Majors refused (stupidly) to play true freshman. Guys like Webb and Pickens frittered away as true freshman on the bench.

In 1989, Webb gained over 1,200 yards while sharing early season carriers with Reggie Cobb. And that was pretty much it, because he blew his knee out in the 2nd contest, a meaningless blowout of hapless Pacific. If ACL procedures were where they’d be just a few years later, he likely goes on to a promising NFL career.
I saw Webb plenty, he was great....but Jamal was better

Sweet memories of all mentioned but Johnnie Jones is my all time favorite

1st Vol to rush break a 1,000 and the only Vol RB to have back to back years rushing over a 1,000

Dylan Sampson, I'm on the younger side, and he broke Gene McEver's record that stood for 95 years. He also drug our offense kicking and screaming to the playoffs, I will always have fond memories of what he did in 2024

Alleged "drop"

If you search "Jabar Gaffney NO CATCH" on YouTube it pops up immediately.

My Dad and I were there...in that endzone...the only home Flarda game I ever went to. It was right in front of us. That garbage ref hated us and he is the only one who signaled TD...from like the 20yd line. The officials closer to the play watching it did not. It was complete and utter BS and everyone knew it. That bastard ref should have been tarred and feathered.

Travis Henry (1997–2000) Henry is the program’s all-time leading rusher with 3,078 career yards. And famously, was quite the ladies man.

Dylan Sampson (2022–2024) In 2024, Sampson set new single-season program records for rushing yards (1,491) and rushing touchdowns (22), surpassing a scoring record that had stood since 1929.

Jamal Lewis (1997–1999) Lewis was a key piece of the 1998 National Championship team and an all-time NFL great. Despite shared carries, he holds the school record for career rushing average at 103 yards per game.

Arian Foster (2005–2008) Foster ranks second in all-time rushing yards (2,964) and holds the school record for career scrimmage yards with 3,706.

James "Little Man" Stewart (1991–1994) Stewart ranks third in career rushing yards (2,890) and finished his career with 35 rushing touchdowns.

Not to be forgotten are Jay Graham, Charlie Garner, Travis Stephens, and Alvin Kamara among the the list of all time greats.

It's hard for me to pick because I respected them all enormously. What do y'all think?
Chuck Webb.

Majors redshirted most true freshman back then. That was a common practice during that time frame.

Yes, common at UT and other big programs. Freshmen were designated as redshirted for the most part, before the season began.
Common and automatic is not the same thing. Majors did not play true freshman. Period. There were plenty of programs that played true freshman in the 90s.

Webb was recruited in the 80s. The 1990s were when the changes began with coaches playing more true freshman. Most bigger programs were reshirting most of not all of their true freshman in the 1980s.

Travis Stephens. As Spurrier said "He ran the ball right down our throats".

And, that bastard ref, was a Vandy Grad.....I was in YY watching it too!

Anyone mentioned Shawn Bryson? He may have been FB but only because we had Lewis,Henry, and Stephens. He showed in the NFL he was a very good back. Also Lewis not being played at the Swamp in 97 when Peyton and all of us were trying to get over the Gators was in my opinion the worst coaching decision by Fulmer. We had like 51 yards rushing or something like that with Darden or whoever Fulmer was stupidly playing. Then we go to Ole Miss the next week and Jamal Lewis breaks the record for freshman rushing yards. Tuberville himself said he didn't understand why he didn't play the previous game.
