If and sadly it is still a big IF Fulmer is fired is there a coach out there that can get us to compete for or even win the SEC in his 1st year like Bruce done with the bball team winning the East and getting a 2 seed in the NCAA's?

Let's start the analysis by looking at what Pearl brought to the table. Many years of success in the lower ranks with less talent and less dollars to work with.

I live in Fort Worth, and one guy who merits consideration is the coach of the local college team -- TCU's Gary Patterson. He has been the head coach at TCU for around 6 years. Most of them have been very good, and he has victories over Oklahoma and Texas Tech (and other BCS schools) to show he can step up and coach against the big boys.

I have met him. While he is not as charasmatic as Pearl (but who is?), I think he could be a really good coach in the SEC. His teams play hard, physical football.

Obviously, there are others who should be considered, but this guy should get an interview.

There probably isn't a coach out there that could come in and win the sec in their first year. But its becoming increasingly obvious phil never will again either. So its time to move on and deal with whatever the first few years bring. I got a feeling it won't be near as bad as some would think. I'am just ready to see a team play with some additude. A team that doesn't shoot itself in the foot repeatedly. I can live with us being outclassed a time or two as long as the team plays hard. They don't do that anymore and its why change is needed, whatever it may bring.

I am actually optimistic that with a strong coaching hire, Tennessee would be competitive next year. It is a favorable schedule, and believe it or not we do have a handful of play makers on each side of the ball.

Patterson, Peterson, or Davis could perhaps do that for us, especially Davis in my opinion. There are not guarantees of immediate success any time you make a coaching change, but UT isn't completely destroyed YET. If we make a move this year, and especially in a manner that keeps this recruiting class from being a total bust, we have a shot of getting back into the race for the SEC.

IMHO Will Muschamp gives us the best chance of being successful right off the bat. He is a great recruiter, he has youth and enthusiam, and more importantly he is a proven defensive guru and from all indications he is hungry to become a head coach. A good solid defense will keep you in most games in any conference and he certainly learned at Auburn how to beat Bama and other SEC leaders. Look what he has done at Texas!

I have a major gripe with Gary Patterson, he is coaching at TCU and the landscape in his area is well set for a decent to above average team every year. TCU is sory of like USF, UCF and to a lesser extent FAU and FIU. Each year there is something ridiculous like 300-400 Division 1 recruits that come from the state of Texas. The majority of them have love and loyalty for the programs within the state. They have feelings of wanting to stay home for family health reasons, family in general and staying home in general.

The problem with 300 Division 1 recruits is that with 5 major programs in TX (TU, TTU, A&M, Baylor, and TCU) even if half of those recruits are major stars or have no qualms that will lead them to leave the state, it still leaves 150 recruits to stay in state. Now with 25 or so scholarships, it really is not slim pickings for TCU.

I think Patterson is a by-product of whom he has on his roster, more then of his actual coaching.

Put it this way, last year in Div-I baseball, a team from Dallas Baptist College was in the top 20 for NCAA Baseball for nearly 3 weeks. This shows you how serious athletics are in the state of TX and the type of athletes they produce.

Lane Kiffin or Will Muschamp is the hire...Both have experience recruiting elite players and both have been proven winners. I lean towards Kiffin since he was the recruiting coordinator after Norm Chow and the classes that USC pulled in, during his two years were remarkable. Also his ability to work with WR to get to the next level would help Coach Scott in his progression as a big time coach.

Also, IMO..Butch Davis is not leaving UNC. Why would he leave when he is at a prominent school in a semi-easy conference and is still recruiting to about 60% of the players he wants.

We would have to offer butch saban money to come here. He is in a winnable conference right now. The rebuilding process is well under way. Also a ton less pressure to produce. Its not real conceivable that butch packs up and heads our way with those factors out there. But again you offer him saban money and he probably hops a plane, not even stopping long enough to clean out his desk in chapel hill.

I don't think so, to me he is at a premiere spot. He has done a great job at rebuilding a program from nothing. He has recruits excited to stay in state and his national recruiting ability is looking to make this a powerhouse football team. Not everyone is Nick Saban or in the great words of Manual Ramirez..."my services will go to the highest bidder in the offseason", ask Coach Bruce Pearl, when we all thought he was going to Indiana.

Trust me the way to fix this thing is to hire, Lane Kiffin and Gene Chizik after he is fired from ISU after another dispicable season up there (because unless we hire Muschamp as a HC he is not leaving TU)

Do me a favor and try to see if this would work for Tennessee if our head coach was responsible for:

During Kiffin’s tenure with USC, he was instrumental in the development of several wide receivers and tight ends in the program. While he was there, USC produced noted talents such as NFL draftees Mike Williams, Keary Colbert, Kareem Kelly, Alex Holmes and Dominique Byrd. In addition,Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett

3 Recruiting classes we could only dream about and .....

Under Kiffin in 2005 the USC offense produced school records in virtually every dimension, averaging 49.1 points and 579 yards per game.

Do we have similar playmakers, possibly ( we have Creer, Jones, Paige, maybe Oku and Giles...no reason to not think we can have similar caliber players to USC's back then (getting a QB recruit as well)

I could say I would be sold on those numbers and players

Even though i agree Kiffen would be an upgrade and i like him regardless what other people say on here. But one thing is for sure, Kiffen will not be able to recruit at UT like he did at USC. For one this is SEC country and we have 4 NC coaches in this conference alone not to mention surrounding areas. At USC he had pick of the litter because they had really no competition. He's not really proven yet at the HC position. The SEC is a whole nother animal compared to the PAC-10. I like Muschamp better because of his experience in the SEC. I would actually prefer Brian Kelly. He would serve as HC/OC and we could hire a special teams coach. Gary Patterson would deserve a solid look also. TCU is a physical football team and i like the way they play. I think it would translate well in the SEC.
