Sometime my 75 year old memory fails me, but I do remember Howard Bayne playing for UT. Tough as nails. Brakefield would not have abused him at all like he did Okara last night.

I guess now that everyone is getting paid, players are afraid to get emotional.

I remember basketball was mostly civil growing up, but the main reason was due to an unspoken rule that if you play dirty, someone was going to pay you back.

It bothers me watching us get shoved around and just taking it all night. Force the refs to clean it up by matching the physicality. That’s the reason the refs exist - to keep it civil.

The NCAA tournament has always imo allowed the teams to be more physical than the regular season.

Nope Baynes last year was 66, Payne only played 1 year at UK, 70-71.

Bayne was a key player when the Vols beat undefeated and #1 ranked Rupps Runts in the last game of the 66 season. UK went to the Finals where Texas Western beat them in the famous game.

Wont find Paynes name anywhere on UK campus as he was later convicted 3 times for rape. Hard to get away with rape when you are 7'2.😀
Note: I liked this post for the second paragraph.

Bayne was my uncle through marriage. I grew up being a Tennessee fan living in GA. He gave me a basketball from his Tennessee playing days. I will have to take a photo of it and post it here. He sadly passed years ago, he suffered a lot with his knees after college. He was a very sweet and humble man too.

Howad Baybe was fearless. Remember watching him with Mears' Tennessee team on t.v. He played at UT 1963-66. At 6'6" and 230 lbs, a fierce competitor, this All-Southeastern Conference player was known as the "Chairman of the Boards" during his tenure as a power forward under Coach Ray Mears at the University of Tennessee.
