Illegal batting

I wouldn't think what happened on that play was illegal because many times when there's a fumble it gets batted all over the place, usually unintentional...players are just grasping at the ball. On this one, being in the end zone may be different, I'm not sure...
Anyway........FINAL SCORE FROM ATHENS:

VOLS 34
Puppies 31

On the play that Eason recovered a fumble in the end zone, the ball was batted towards him by the ball carrier. Was this not an illegal play? I was sure of it when I saw it and have not seen one mention of it during the game.

Had it been batted downfield to gain yards, they would have called a penalty. But if it is fumbled into the endzone, and stays there, I would think it would be to the referee's judgement. It had to have been a matter of feet, not yards.

I have not gotten a chance to see this play (I was at the game Saturday), but I do know that an "Illegal Bat" is not allowed regardless of the down or situation. An Illegal Bat is an Illegal bat. An Illegal Bat is defined as "Any player batting or punching a loose ball in any direction".

Isn't it by definition loose when it leaves the pitchers hand?

What's the call if a fumble is bouncing towards the sideline and a player dives and bats it back into the field of play?
