So after reading through many threads the past few days that have been derailed into a 3 star recruiting debate, I decided to post a thread to get everyone’s mind off of recruiting for a moment. Team 120 undoubtedly has some of the nation’s most talented offensive threats, but how do we get the ball to all of them? Being a run first offense, we can safely assume our RB’s will get their touches, but for the WR’s it’s hard to know who will lead the charge. I looked over last years stats and here are the average per game stats calculated by taking the total 2015 stats and dividing it by 13 games and rounding to the nearest one's digit.

2015 Avg/Game Offensive stats
Passing (comp-att)- (17-29)
Rushing Att - 47
Total Plays/Game - 76

2015 Receiving - Catches per Game
Von Pearson - 3
Alvin Kamara - 3
Josh Malone - 2
Josh Smith - 2
Ethan Wolf - 2
Jalen Hurd - 2
Jauan Jennings - 1
Johnathon Johnson - 1
(Alex Ellis, Preston Williams, Marquez North, RDA IV, Dobbs, Pig) - 1
Total 17

2015 Rushing - Attempts per Game
Jalen Hurd - 21
Alvin Kamara - 8
Josh Dobbs - 11
John Kelly - 3
Rest of Team - 4
Total 47

Now if you were in charge of distributing the touches to our offensive weapons, how would you do it? Copy and paste the 2016 Player List below into your response and distribute the ball as you please. Even though Team 120 may complete an average of 5 more passes a game this year, let's stay within the constraints of the 2015 game averages for the sake of consistency (17 completions and 47 rushing attempts). If you’re like me, it can be difficult to divvy up the touches.

2016 Receiving - Catches/Game
Jalen Hurd
Alvin Kamara
Josh Malone
Preston Williams
Latrell Williams
Marquez Callaway
Tyler Byrd
Jauan Jennings
Brandon Johnson
Jason Croom
Jeff George
Josh Smith
Ethan Wolf

2016 Rushing - Attempts/Game
Jalen Hurd
Alvin Kamara
Josh Dobbs
John Kelly
Carlin Fils-Aime
Jayson Sparks

Only number I'm really concerned about is I want Dobbs' carries to drop from 11 per game to around 7 or 8.

Here's kinda what I was thinking.

2016 Receiving - Catches/Game
Jalen Hurd - 1
Alvin Kamara - 2
Josh Malone - 2
Preston Williams - 4
Latrell Williams - redshirt
Marquez Callaway -1
Tyler Byrd - 2
Jauan Jennings, Brandon Johnson, Jason Croom, Jeff George -1
Josh Smith - 2
Ethan Wolf - 2

2016 Rushing - Attempts/Game
Jalen Hurd - 22
Alvin Kamara - 10
Josh Dobbs - 10
John Kelly - 5
Carlin Fils-Aime - redshirt
Jayson Sparks

Edit: Point is, I wanted to get the ball to more receivers but it's not easy when you only have 17 catches a game. You've got to get the ball to your playmakers.

Without a doubt, we must get the ball to our receiver corps this year. If Dobbs can do that, the offensive threats coupled with our talented defense will be hard to stop.

Does anyone not see John Kelly the same way I do -- a bruiser running back to gain more experience for next year after our esteemed dynamic duo are gone? Haven't seen him on the breakout threads.

What if we have been a run based offense because of our OL woes? This season could see the passing game open up big time and the running game take a little bit of a back seat.

I'd build it kind of conceptually, from the top down.

First, would like to hit 80 offensive plays/game this year. We were close to it last year, at about 78. We can improve our tempo a bit, I think.

I'd like a good 50/50 balance of pass to run. Some might shoot for 60 pass / 40 run, but I think as special as we are running the ball, it's just part of our offensive character. You gotta know who you are. That's who we are, with Hurd and Kamara and Dobbs. So play to our strengths while still maintaining balance. That means: 40 run plays, and 40 pass plays per game.

Next, I'd love to see a 3-2-1 ratio for Hurd-Kamara-Dobbs in the running game. Last year it was more like 3-1-2, but we should get Kamara more touches and Dobbs a bit less (he can make his highlight reel shots by throwing this year, fingers crossed).

So the 40 run plays come down to:
- 20 runs/game Hurd
- 13 runs/game Kamara
- 7 runs/game Dobbs

Among the 40 pass plays, I'd like to see less rotation among the depth of the receiver group and more focus on key playmakers. So a breakout something like this:
- 12 to Malone (assuming Josh breaks out this year)
- 12 to PWilly
- 10 to Smith
- 6 to Wolf/Croome (with maybe a bit of Hurd or Kamara tossed in there)

As for the 2nd string guys (e.g., Kelly in for Hurd, Jennings in for Malone), they get their share of those numbers if they get into the latter part of the game or to give the 1st string a breather.

That's how I'd like to see it break down, more or less.

Go Vols!

Total plays will increase to about 90 a game. All of our hopes and dreams will be realized by #120. Disclaimer, only if your hopes and dreams involve Tampa, 15-0, and a lot of hardware.

Go Vols!

Yes. Hell, maybe a run at running back. If it's only one play a game, or every other game:

Jet sweep, reverse, wheel route ... something ... you gotta at least throw it in the mix. I remember waiting around for Fulmer / Kiffin to put Eric Berry on KO or offense and it never (really) came. I'm against preserving scholarship athletes for the NFL. Use them now instead of watching em' get preserved and jump to the draft as Juniors.

I think it's much more likely that you see that 60/40 split you mentioned, which would be 48 runs, 32 pass plays. With that, I'd split it up:

Run Plays (48 total):
Hurd - 22
Kamara - 13
Dobbs - 8
Kelly - 5
Fils-Aime - [redshirt]
Lewis - [redshirt]

Pass Targets (32 total):
P. Williams - 6
J. Malone - 4
J. Smith - 4
A. Kamara - 4
Et. Wolf - 3
J. Croom - 2
J. Hurd - 2
J. Jennings - 2
T. Byrd - 2
M. Callaway - 2
J. George - .5
Jk. Johnson - .5
B. Johnson - [redshirt]
L. Williams - [redshirt]

This gives your top 4 guys (starting WR's & Kamara) the most targets, with a couple deep shots mixed in for guys like Byrd/Callaway, around 5 targets a game for your TE's, screen game for guys like Jennings & Hurd, and maybe a "throw it up" fade for George or a play-action out of the backfield for Jakob come time for goalline plays. Fun hypothetical, though OP. Ready for Football Time in Tennessee! JMO, GBO.
