It does look like we are not in good position. Running back makes it to the line of scrimmage and he has several options on which way to go with no defender(s) closing. Most of the time the runner has one option or no options with several converging.

Oh........I just had a dream, I thought we were in the last week of the regular season. So, Tennessee is 1-0. What does everyone think about the Battle at Bristol?

Really, this can't still be on your mind this far into the season........its time to wake up and let it go.

I think the point the OP is making is many are saying the reason our defense looks so bad is because we are playing 3rd stringers in key positions. Our 3rd stringers should be the equivalent of 1 and 2 stars at App State.

He could have added more to his question so minimize confusion, but there you have it...

That was the first game of the season. Our offense is moving the ball much better. You may say against inferior defenses but these are SEC teams. When the season is over and you look at the entire body of work I am sure we will have very good offensive numbers and terrible defensive numbers. We beat GA and FL and will probably destroy someone in a bowl game. Finish with 10 wins. Take away the SC loss and few can argue that this was a great season.

Battle of Bristol? Man I want to know if we won the Orange & White Game or not.

Was it that Appy game that we had so many dropped passes?

Florida. 5-6 in the first half. Our guys caught everything in the second half.

App State was the first game where our OL, averaging 50-60 more pounds per man, got throughly dominated by a MAC-level DL.

I apologize, I am at that end of the season type mood. I get it, but to me it is a moot point, UT defense is nothing compared to the beginning of the year, I couldn't begin to compare this team to what UT had at the beginning of the year, the defense is mere shadow of of the men that started the season. I just want the W, and no more injuries. I am hoping that a month will give everyone time to heal and improve of those things we can control.

Exactly KB. I think what the OP, and I would like to see is a intelligent discussion of the type mixed rushes, slants, spread lineups and such that allowed such an undersized DL to have success against the Vols and further, would such tactics work to help the Vols lack of size at DT?

Guess he came to the wrong place and I should go back to the CNN page.

App State was starting a lot of upperclassmen and that makes a huge difference. How was Houston able to shut down OU and Louisville with 2 and 3 star players? Why weren't they able to stop SMU with those same players? Starters were injured against SMU, not OU and Louisville.

Our base defense is a 4-2-5. This is helpful against teams that spread you out. For this defense to work you need smallish LBs with quick lateral motion. JRM and DKjr fit that profile, Jumper doesn't even come close. Also your DTs need to force runners out wide by clogging the hole. Our back up DEs playing DT for the first time ever can't do that. Throw in our back up safeties and corners are bad tacklers in space and there you go. Our defense needs to switch to a 4-3-4 but our players are too young to have learned multiple positions and we don't have good LB depth.

Shoop is now running a high risk/high reward defense. He is gambling on sacks to create long yardage situations. Knowing that our offense is scoring at will the other coach knows they can't play conservative on 2nd and 3rd and long. This results in more turnovers which we have taken advantage of. Our offense is clicking which means opposing QBs know they have to score on every possession. Sure sometimes they make the right read and dump it off for a big gain, but sometimes they try to dump it off and our DT gets a pick 6.

I think the best explanation was done in a different thread. It explained that in the new system, most of the reps were going to the 1s so they could learn it. Then the 2s got some and on down the line. As time went on, the 1s should have been able to expand their knowledge of Shoops D, but instead as they went down, he had to spend more time teaching it to the 2s and 3s, as opposed to adding more complexity and schemes.

Or something like that.

Seemed to me like our offensive game plan was the culprit.

But, to the OP: from day one our tackling has been horrific. I, at least partially, blame the new Strength coach. (Which, of course, means Butch, ultimately.) We really do seem physically weaker on both the offensive and defensive fronts than last year. Lately, we have way too many guys running OUT of the play, instead of running INTO the play, and, with a couple of exceptions, we still aren't tackling very well. We talk fundamentals, but Appy State teaches them.

The scar loss really altered our season.

Injuries altered our season.

Even if we won that game We would still be heading for a slaughter against Alabama cause we can't stop the run.

I really don't know why people care so much whether we reach Atlanta if we're just going to lose. And most likely in a horribly embrassing manner. I'd personally rather pass and just head to the Sugar Bowl.

Absolutely 100% UNTRUE. How did you get a "like" on that one. Show me a 2 star athlete playing offense or defense on our team. Not going to happen. The defense looks bad right now because we are playing many inexperienced players. Mizzou starters are 3 star athletes who have been coached by a terrific coach that just retired. A 3 star Mizzou offensive lineman is still a very good player and the experience helps a great deal as well.
