Obviously Russell has a history with new Wazzu coach Mike Leach since he worked under him in between stints under Dooley.

Leach was hands-off with Russell’s special teams, micro-managing only in rare instances such as saying which starters could or couldn’t play in the game’s third phase.

Dooley, for obvious reasons, lack of depth and/or experience on practically every level of the offense and defense, was more choosy with which players could be used on special teams. Dooley also is a former special teams coach himself, and he was more hands-on with “teams” than Leach. Dooley probably spends as much time on special teams as any coach, whereas Leach and many others won’t meddle too much unless things get bad. And under Russell, all things being equal, things don’t usually get bad.

Russell has a rep as a solid position coach and recruiter and widely considered a very good special teams coordinator.

As for kicking issues, some of those are not really on a coach.

And Darr was under specific instructions in many cases to focus on punting high rather than long because coaches were consistently concerned about Tennessee’s lack of athletes catching up with the Vols on coverage units — see the Arkansas game, when one Darr mis-hit led to a disaster — to see why coaches were generally OK with Darr hanging high 35-yarders that couldn’t be returned.

You have to be pleased with Devrin Young's performance until he seemed to hit a wall late in the season. I look for great things from him next year. He needs a year in the weight room.

Look our special teams stats before Russell came with CDD to Tennessee. Our coverage has improved dramatically. The guy can coach and our issues were depth related not coaching imo.

I do not think he will be missed

My feelings is that Russell felt that 2012 may be the last season for this crew. He left a year earlier, rather than all of them being replaced by Hart in 2012.
Russell probably sees the writing on the wall!

I guess JC is still going to be here to call all those toss sweeps and the wildcat when it isnt needed.Im just wondering what happened to all these coaching changes that were suppose to happen?

I would guess that "Pig" will return punts or receive kick offs next season.
One reason that Russell left for "Ryan Leaf University"
is because he is from Spokane, Washington and also his parents are retired and living in Idaho.
His familiarity with Leach and the lack of job security with this staff, probably played a part in the decision. Another losing season and Hart will run them all out of here; except for Jay Graham.

No. He's worked with leach before. Less pressure for him now.

If I remember correctly, didn't we get a kick or a punt blocked in the 2010 Florida game???

I believe this will be the best thing happen for our kickers, not that I think Russell was the issue...just because we had a bad year...fresh start is always good for someone that is struggling

Its just hard for me to believe that he wasn't the problem. It seems like we NEVER make a play on special teams. We never block a punt.. I can't remember the last punt or kick return for a td. You would think eventually someone would get lucky and break one. I would love for someone to compare how many totally negative plays we have to huge great plays. If thats even possible to compare.

I do believe that coverage was pretty good .. people act like the arkansas return happened week in and week out.. It was a bad play but besides that play the coverage on kicks and punts were generally good.

Thats the spirit Smokey!! Way to stand behind the program and team you are a fan of.

Nothing beats instability in a program to get recruits in and coaches doing their job
