1. Either CJP is gonna hire a man with experience in the spread ( getting the qbs legs more involved, and more RPO ) to help him install said offense ( with all the different formations/ways of dressing it up ). Goodbye to under center, I formation and two te sets, not completely, but for the most part.

Or...

2. He will hire ....... ........ well, ( hopefully ) a sharp passionate man to continue to help him with the offense he ( cjp ) has installed already. The more traditional type offense we have been seeing. I make this second point mainly to point out that I think the offense we have now is the offense CJP wanted, has the most knowledge of. I think he ( cjp ) was definitely involved in the install and scheme, overall and game by game, of the current offense we have.

I personally think cjp wants to go route 1, the benefits are too great to pass up. I give option 1 around a 70% chance of happening. I think option 1 hinges on CJP finding and being able to aquire a quality more proven spread off coordinator to help him with the install. If he can't find and aquire that quality, he won't chance it with an up and comer here. He will go with option 2, because cjp has a better grasp of the traditional scheme and won't need as much help scheme wise. I give option 2 around a 30% chance. Option 2 really is the fall back plan, as I think cjp wants to go spread, but wants and needs a quality more experienced spread mind to come in and help with the install.

I'm personally ok with option 2, for it will be a continuation of what we have been seeing, but with the added benefit of 1 year of experience under the players belts. Chances are, we will see a better more consistent product next year on offense.

But, I love option 1. Getting the qbs legs involved, plus more rpo, puts major stress on the defense. It has taken over college football and has even made its way up into the pros to an extent.

Before football season started, I would have argued vehemently with you about your offensive scheme preference. After watching the really good teams in college and the NFL play, I think you are right for now. Watching Kansas City and the Rams play clinched it for me. You have got to have a complete offense capable of making 3 yards into 10 as well as the capability of explosive plays in the passing game to win. As good as these two are, they may not be able to beat New Orleans who has just enough defense to keep the other team from running up 40-50.

Your first option is never going to happen. Pruitt is old school smash mouth football. Same way he is man press on defense. He wants to hand off 40 times a game.

Here’s the thing, you don’t have to give up the I formation and under center looks with the spread.

To an extent I think you do. Only so much time in college ball for install. Notice I said for the most part. I do think cjp wants to keep a little under center stuff for short yardage situations.

If Pruitt wanted to install a spread offense then he would have done it this year. I cannot imagine him having this big of a change in his offensive philosophy after losing his coordinator. Frankly, I think it is likely that Will Friend gets promoted. Friend has had some success as an offensive coordinator at Colorado State and Pruitt is familiar with him and trusts him. I do not look forward to the collective volnation freakout when it happens though. Personally, I will withhold judgement until after year 4 (time for Pruitt to get his own offensive line recruits and develop them), until then it is going to be a long hard slog regardless of who is leading the offense.

Helluva insight/sense you got there. He’s gonna do one of only 2 very opposite options.

I hate the spread.

don't have to run the spread to use a QB that can run...it helps to keep a defense on it's heels, if a QB has to scramble, it helps...couple of designed runs can get that 3rd and two...it just helps all-around to have a QB with respectable wheels...:D

I think that there are two ways that Pruitt may go on this hire
# 1. Promote from within. #2. Hire a high school head coach as O C. Like Arkansas did with His Malzahn
I don't see a successful, current college O C being hired

But he isn't recruiting QBs for option 1. Everything I've heard about Shrout and Mauer screams drop back passer, not spread option.
Maurer has a lot of yards on the ground this year to go with yards through the air. Shrout is a different story. But Shrout is mobile and can throw on the run.

It's going to be Will Friend. It would be the most Vol thing ever.

Honestly if I’m Maurer, I basically make it known who I want as OC. What incentive does he have to come here if Pruitt promotes Friend?

I suspect 1 thing about this new OC; based on UT's history of hiring on-the-cheap up-n-comers, this hire will be disappointing to fans. It will have all the excitement of CSPAN program. A high school coach stepping into the role would be the most UT thing ever.

Friend did a decent job as OC at CSU. The incentive would be if Weinke became the QB coach.

But I do understand what you are saying.

With Maurers delete of a tweet regarding who he wanted as OC I would assume he has knowledge of an inkling of who could possibly be his next OC.

Right but Friend and Weinke shouldn’t really excite a QB recruit..... Friend has other issues to worry about before playcalling and that’s the line. I still believe this 1000% but the OC should always be the QB coach.

Too many great names out there to just settle on Friend

Correct. NO WAY a spread offense is coming to knoxville...don't care who the OC is. Pruitt's not a change with the wind guy, and neither is Fulmer. Both believe in power football, vertical passing game and balanced attack, so they'll hire someone who lines up with that philosophy, which also will have minimal disruption in learning schemes, so that JG's FOURTH OC in four years will flow easier. Also, scheme change sets us back another year or two...which Pruitt doesn't have the luxury of time to do that, even if he wanted to.

Honestly if they were just going to settle on friend I don’t see why they would wait so long to announce.

I suspect CJP is looking for the best option out there, that fits what he wants to do, if he makes Friend the OC then he has to recruit a new line coach, new running backs coach (maybe). Makes no sense on the logistical side.

That’s the only reason I don’t think it will be Friend.

After pondering it, I can't see Pruitt going with a true spread type of guy.

That scheme seems to have peeked and is starting to trend downwards.

Pray you are right.

I will say this, I do think there will be a few under the radar guys that Pruitt will look into. He was able to snatch a lot of great coaches/recruiters on defense.

As much as he seemed to be angry on the sidelines with Helton, find it hard that he would just go with a yes man. That was downfall of Butch and Pruitt's background isn't Offense.
