The "roster problem" starts to evaporate fast in your 5th year and is a memory in year 6. Highly respectable success thus far (except vs. GA) considering where we were.

As a Vol fan for 40+ years, I just hope we don't migrate back toward the mediocre days of the 70s and early 80s and get conditioned to that.
We're still under visit sanctions and still down a scholarship or two, I think.

Heupel has yet to enter a season level with most SEC teams in that respect.

The ceiling is raised by upping the recruiting game and being willing to work with championship coaches who he doesn’t have a close relationship with. The players love him and he’s an offensive genius. Some thought that Spurrier had hit his ceiling and he hired Bob Stoops. I think there’s a small amount of correlation here.
Agreed. Our recruiting seems quite underwhelming to say the least! I did see we received a commitment yesterday from a 5’11, 160 lb. safety so we’ve got that going for us!

I said “during their first 4 years”. Did you miss that? Josh has 2 top ten finishes. None of Barnes elite eights were in his first 4 years. Tony’s NC wasn’t in his first 4 years.
TV made the CWS and a Super Regional in his first 4 years (3rd and 4th year).

*obviously can't count 2020

100% the defense has been better. But I think Banks is closer to his ceiling than Heupel. Heupel has hampered himself with some mediocre coaching promotions and sketchy QB evaluations. I still think there is time for him to get the offense back on track.
I'll be curious to see if he evolves with this offense. Now that DCs have had time to adapt, it's not what one would call "exciting" to watch. It's almost like they have no idea what to do offensively outside of the sideline pass and running out of 12 personnel.

I go back and forth between the problems being our evals or the developmental abilities of the coaching staff. Might be a combination of both?

It’s funny. But Butch has our last 2 wins against UGA and has come closer in Gainesville and Tuscaloosa than Heupel. The 2023 Florida game was horrid.
Butch win #1 against UGA / Richt's last stance
Butch win #2 against UGA / Smart's first year without his recruits
Butch would get steam rolled against a CKS Georgia team!

I’ll feel bad cheering against South Florida the next two years. But I need Golesh and Burns back and my personal happiness is more important than their lives. 😄

I wish the recruiting game was pure and organic as it once was. Now, to up the recruiting game is more on donors than coaches. We need a lot more $$ to keep up with the Ohio State's and Texas teams. The portal has not been kind to us either. Once again...$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

We are overlooking that there has been a huge Culture change in the program since Kiffin left. 2 Low Bars in Dooley and Pruitt. A Jones sideshow. Interim coach that kicked JJ off the team, NIL, Covid, TP and more.

Team concepts and maybe we are seeing more because of social media, but think about what we did not see going on in 2009 in that locker room through the years vs today. We really don't know how bad it was during that period.

CJH started -33? players his first year that bailed out. The mess with the NCAA what a Sh*t show during his first 2-3 years. Nico the "Wonder boy" would have done well under Jones and probably did not do well because CJH was actually trying to coach him.

one of these three feats this year:

ONE. "
*from this X Post this afternoon ................DISCUSS...

So, what if your needs are not met this year. Are you calling for his firing if none of these happen?
Serious question--do you want to fire him if none of these 3 things happen?

Can’t state how proud I am that Josh Heupel is the coach of our team. Don’t always understand what he’s doing, but barring something crazy, that part will never change.!

Tennessee win percentage from 2005-2020: 52%

Tennessee win percentage with Josh Heupel: 71%

Tennessee win percentage since 2022: 77%

If he keeps up the 77% win percentage, I don't care. That plenty of accomplishment for me.

When you are getting beat on the recruiting trail, it's harder to win on game day. When you have 3/4 the NIL spending of your biggest rivals, you get beat on the recruiting trail and lose talent to the portal.

Bigger question: who would replace him?
Answer: no one.

Heupel has been fantastic so far. Not a whole lot outside of a handful of games to complain about. However, the pressure to make staff changes will mount if the offense continues to struggle.

We need to recruit consistently top 10 if we want to be very good year in year out. With the way we’re recruiting now 7-8 wins is the floor. We start hauling in top 10 classes consistently and 9-10 becomes the floor

I really believe these are three very tough measuring sticks for Hype...even if it is year 5.
#1 - Talent gap with UGA is massive
#2 - Beating Bama at BDS is no short order. Plus I believe they will be much better this season.
#3 - Gators. This is the game. Also difficult. The Gators may have the best QB in the SEC this season.

I want to see us win EVERY winnable game. No whoops. Play competitive with a chance to steal a win at a game we're not favored.

I don't get the "roster is lacking" view. There's plenty of capable talent on hand to have an outstanding season.
Not sure when 2025 ranking will be out but our ranking won't change much. CJH is beating some SEC teams with lesser or equal talent however we need to cross the Rubicon in recruiting to be elite.

Here is where every SEC program ranked in the updated 247Sports Team Talent Composite for the 2024 season:

1. Alabama: 1,018.28 points (17 five-stars, 50 four-stars)
2. Georgia: 1,006.89 points (14 five-stars, 54 four-stars)
4. Texas: 953.95 points (11 five-stars, 50 four-stars)
7. Texas A&M: 914.52 points (eight five-stars, 43 four-stars)
8. Oklahoma: 906.61 points (four five-stars, 53 four-stars)
9. LSU: 906.19 points (five five-stars, 46 four-stars)
12. Florida: 894.24 points (four five-stars, 48 four-stars)
17. Tennessee: 858.67 points (four five-stars, 37 four-stars)
18. Auburn: 833.61 points (one five-star, 42 four-stars)
19. Missouri: 807.36 points (three five-stars, 26 four-stars)
20. Ole Miss: 801.66 points (two five-stars, 28 four-stars)
21. South Carolina: 798.18 points (three five-stars, 27 four-stars)
24. Kentucky: 788.36 points (two five-stars, 29 four-stars)
26. Arkansas: 779.17 points (two five-stars, 27 four-stars)
34. Mississippi State: 743.77 points (zero five-stars, 23 four-stars)
