I need some advice

I guess this is where this thread should go? Anyways i'm 18, and a senior in high school. I live in Indiana, but i bleed orange and i have since i was about 4 years old. It has always been my dream to play football at UT.....then i realized im a 5'8 175 pound cornerback playing in southern Indiana on a Catholic school team. Anyways, my point is that while i have realized i won't be able to play football at UT, it is still my dream school, and i would do anything to go there. My first question is:

Should i try to attend UT over going to a prestigous (sp) in state school and play D3 football there? or should i just go to the D3 school, play football, get a GREAT education and then buy season tickets for UT once im making big money?

my second problem is that I lack the funds to attend UT. If i was to try to go there, does anyone know of a way that i could get help with funding for school at UT?

I guess that about sums it up. any advice is helpful. Thanks!

Not everyone can attend school at UT. If you have the opportunity to attend a quality school that is much easier from a budget standpoint and will allow you the chance to play football, I would tell you to go for it. Get your education, follow your athletic dream and tevo the Vols games every Sat.

is there any way i could get there cheaper by like attending a smaller school in Tenn for a year or two and then transferring? I have the grades to get in to UT no problem.

You could attend Pellissippi State, UTC or UT Martin. They have made a network of campuses and all grades should transfer between. UTC and UT Martin both have football teams.

In order to weigh your options, you should check with admissions to find out what their residency requirements are. e.g. If you live in TN for a year, then you might qualify as in-state? This is one of the best times of your life. Enjoy it and get a good education wherever you go.

i know the feeling of having aspirations to play ball at the next level. that being said, the next level should not be about athletics. unless you are getting some letters in your locker , than you should focus first and foremost on the education you can receive for the budget for which you can spend. you might have a specific place that offers what you want to study that is a better fit. if you can scholarship some where than you should consider that. what i am getting at unless you are not too sure that you can scholarship in football than you should focus more on a degree and try and walk on where ever you go. not all of us are fortunate to play ball for ut, but you should be much more proud to walk out of somewhere with a degree. but if you are dead set on playing ball there is nothing wrong with a d3 or d2 school paying for your education if you can scholarship. just think long and hard and weigh your options. you may have never thought you would end up where you do when it is all said and done.

well the main D3 school i am looking at is Wabash (not sure if anyone will have even heard of it) and they have been in contact with me a lot about playing there and stuff, so i know i can play there if i go there. The tuition to go there would still be really expensive because it is such a great school, but i have a lot of scholarship opportunities and in state tuition and stuff so it wont be AS expensive.

If i were to go to UT, i strongly doubt i would try to walk on to the football team. That being said i would try to get involved with it in some way whether it be an equipment manager job or something like that. My only real problem is at this time i doubt i can afford it. So i guess my real question is what are some things i can do to maybe get into UT cheaper. Are there any other things i can do other than living there for a year and then transferring?

if you really want to be at ut than you should move down here as soon as you can and start building your residency. it might be a year like others have said but it may be longer. i am not too sure on that. but you can certainly move down here and go to a community college which will cut your education costs a lot to knock out all of the initial gen ed. classes that are just as good at a community school as you would get at ut. in fact i would suggest anyone going to a community school first to get in the groove of how college works for you and for the obvious cost differences. also you would have some more time to figure out what you wanted to study when you did make it to ut. a lot can change over the first couple of years.

sounds like you have a great idea of what you want, just go and get it. but like i said it is important to go to a school for education. football won't always be there but what you decide to do now will set up the rest of your life. sorry if i sound like a guidance counselor. i just want to help you in a turbulent time.

also i have family in huntingburg and jasper so i want to see a southern indiana kid make it out in the world.

If you have family here lie about you residency and be a walk on too the football program. Probably not the best advise but it is advice I have seen posted before.

i believe it is a fitness test to weed out folks. from there who knows. i am sorry you hate jasper so much. my grandparents are in huntingburg. so i have more ties to that town than jasper. but if you want more of civilization than you have to go to jasper.

well i get even more civilization in evansville about an hour away from jasper. I just dislike them because we can never seem to beat them! we probably would have taken them down this year but we had like our top 4 or 5 linebackers out with injuries so they ran for like 366 yards on us. Anyways so you think its just a fitness test to weed out some people? is it like super difficult or just some minor stuff?

Apply for every single scholarship out there. There are a ton, and with some help from your guidance councelor, you may be able to find one or two to help keep some of the out of state tuition down. Won't hurt to try...



You could even be on the scout team at UT when you get here.

i think i remember hearing that kiffin had them taking a fitness test to trim some of the fat this last spring. but every player takes fitness tests so there may not be much difference between schollys and walk-ons.

I have family that lives in Cleveland and some in Nashville. My dad is originally from cleveland. my dad took me to a game sometime when i was in the 4-6 years old range? all i really remember was that it was AMAZING. i think they were playing some ohio team? and im pretty sure jamal lewis was the running back. UT has been my dream school since then. I used to tell everyone that i was going to play there when i get older and play for coach fulmer! You wouldnt believe the crap i catch at school and just in general for liking Tennessee. Too many IU and ND fans around here for my liking, but i always take up for UT!
