. . .how someone could be a "fan" of more than one college team, even if its two different sports. I'm not knocking anyone who is, I just don't get it myself. I work with a guy who went to UT, he cheers for UT in football, but if the basketball Vols were playing UNC, he would cheer for Carolina. I like some teams better than others, but I don't see myself ever being able to be a "fan" of any team but the Vols in any sport. Anyone else find this hard to understand?

No, it isn't hard to understand. Some people aren't brought up to be vol fans like many of us. Some start to follow them as a result of moving, college, spouses, etc.

I almost posted the same thing awhile back. I don't get it either. I put my all into my Vols and I'm with them win or lose. If we have a bad season - I don't go rooting for another team. Even people with ties to certain teams. If that's your team, fine. Stick with them.

Less perplexing but still somewhat is the craze of Nascar fans to root for several different drivers. I pull for the team my guy is on, because if they do well, it means better info, better equipment ect. for my guy, but I just don't get pulling for 3 or 4 different guys. It's almost like they are blanketing the field with guys they like so that no matter what they win. Just doesn't make sense to me. Takes some of the fun out of it.

I get all the reasons for split allegiances . . . except for the blatantly obvious bandwagon jumpers that tend to be Memphis, UNC and Duke basketball fans.

I guess. . .I could see myself following another team if I moved there, but not being a real "fan" i.e. I wouldn't feel the need to go onto their message board and post all my frustrations after they lost :)

So true! I worked with a guy, born and raised in Tennessee, who pulled for UK in basketball, UT in football, Cowboys in the NFL, and the Spurs in NBA. It pisses me off. Im Tennessee all the way baby, as should anyone born and raised in Tennessee.

I feel the exact same way. I would never root for another team just because the vols have a bad season, or if I move somewhere else I'm not going to become a fan of that team or college I am and will always be a Vol fan, no matter how good or bad they may be. And I totally agree with the Nascar reference, I too hope the team my driver is on does well, but I only have one favorite driver and I only root for him to win.

i actually have a friend in my fraternity who has the exact same allegiances (UNC basketball, TN football), but to remark on the topic, i understand it quite well. I am first and foremost a vol fan. i cheer for them in every sport. however, i am also a memphis basketball fan. i grew up in memphis during the time of penny hardaway and my mom went to school there (my dad went to ut and gave me the great gift of vols), so it has always been instilled in me to root for memphis basketball. this doesn't mean i cheer for memphis over tennessee in basketball, i just get to enjoy the outcome of those games no matter what (i had a GREAT night when the vols won last year to claim the #1 ranking). i think a lot of people are the product of similar situations due to where they grew up/who their parents root for, so it makes sense that people have multi-school allegiances across all sports.

No, to me you're a Vols fan who also follows WKU. . .if they both missed the NCAA tourney this year, I bet you would be more pi$$ed the Vols didn't make it, right?

That's true a lot of the time. It's funny how most split allegiances involve being a fan of winning teams.

It is funny how that works. The answer to my above question, Who do you root for when your teams square off? should be your team. This is JMO, I get having an allegiance toward a certain school or something, but giving two schools your all just doesn't make sense to me.

I have teams that I want to see win, but I would never go as far as to call myself a fan of those teams. I grew up a Vol and that's my team. That's who I follow.

I grew up in Memphis, my parents are both huge Arkansas fans. I wouldn't care if UMemphis disappeared off the face of the earth. I like to see Arkansas do well, but I would never root for them over the Vols. Not to mention I would most certainly not EVER have a 'great time' no matter which team won.

agree, that's where I'm at on this issue. . .so if you cheer for UT above all else in football and UNC above all else in basketball, you're a true fan of neither? :)

to each his own i guess.. i know plenty of people from memphis who feel the same way as you do about the tigers and plenty more who feel the same about the vols. i'm not saying everyone is going to root for the home town/state school, but it factors in at times. furthermore, i don't think it makes me any less of a fan than anyone on here because i am a memphis basketball fan. i went to tons of tigers games and penny hardaway was my favorite player for a long time. hell i was an orlando magic fan back when it was shaq and penny just because that's where penny went (similarly, i am a big colts fan because peyton is my favorite player in any sport ever). to say i would have a 'great time' despite the outcome is inaccurate, i had a great time after the tn mem game last year because it was a great team that didn't really do anything negative to either team. the vols got a #1 ranking out of it, which was very cool seeing as it was the first ever (i believe). i said i am happy with the outcome no matter what when the two teams play because, no matter how i look at it, my team won. that's not to say, i'm not upset about one team losing. furthermore, if any kind of seeding or tournament birth were on the line, i would absolutely want whichever team that had more to gain to win. period.

I'm not judging anyone and how much of a "fan" they are, I just don't get it. I can't envision a scenario where I could support two teams equally, but to each his own. . .

i had a roommate who was born and raised in seattle. he was a fan of ohio state/unc/the red sox/ and steelers/patriots. it was truly a joke and there is no way i can even fathom how that is not riding a bandwagon in every single sport. which he would always deny being the case.
