I don't think we want Bryce Petty

I don't think any or us have to worry about Petty. If he is good enough, Kiffin will tell him. If he is not, he will tell him that too. I think the way he was honest with Boyd and told him he might not be happy in the pro-style offense he plans to run was admirable. I respect the man for being honest. I can assure you, if Petty is not good for UT's system, Kiffin will let him know it. I am not gonna worry about it. I am sure we will be happy with this recruiting class on signing day, and we will have the best QB to fit the system.

It never ceases to amaze me when people form opinions on high school talent they've never seen based on stat lines and recruiting videos.

Since Tee Martin won the NC in 98 I probably should have said since 2000 instead of the last decade. Other than Tee Martin I wouldn't take one Tennessee QB over Jay Cutler.

I wouldn't take Tee Martin over Jay Cutler either.

This is the bottom line on why recruits who are recruited by Kiffin can rest assured that he's not just blowing smoke.
He actually sees how they would fit into his system and considers it the best option available to them to get to the League.

This reminds me of MH's statement at the start of the hiring process that he wanted a coach with great salesmanship skills and utmost integrity. It's hard to imagine anyone else scoring higher marks on those attributes than Lane has in his first few days.

Is anyone aware of other coaches who have been honest enough to tell players of Boyd's talent level that they'd be better off going elsewhere?

Really?

How much better would Cutler have been at UT surrounded by the talent those guys had?

Fulmer would still be here if Cutler had gone to UT. If Cutler was on the 2001 team then we probably win the NC but at least beat LSU in the SECC.

Unless, this guy had a terrible QB coach, offensive coordinator, and team. We don't want this guy! I hope Kiffin has a stud QB in his pocket. We need to recruit one or two this year.

Bryce Petty's stats:

2007 (Jr.) 73 101 5 279 164 58.8 2,042 16 8
2008 (Sr.) 100 166 5 222 134 60.4 1,507 4 8

Have you seen the kid play? Ignorance is bliss I guess. In fact why look at any film on anybody? Let's just have a stat line that if you go over, you automatically get a scholarship. Screw any variables.

In fact, I've just seen your post and I don't think we need you. Sorry but that one just doesn't cut it.

I'd take JC over Tee anyday, talent wise.

The anti-vanderbilt bias is evident on this board (and there is nothing wrong with that). But, if you are being objective and still dont understand how good Jay Cutler is compared to the UT QB's of the last decade then you need to improve your evaluation skills.

great point...i think we finally have coach with eye for talent and balls to make the right call for the program........feels good to have someone in control that will do the same with the players we already have also

Its awesome when someone calls out another poster, and that poster doesn't even have to respond cause they completely missed the point.

2 words about what high school stats and ratings mean....ANDY KELLY. A nobody that did great things when coached correctly.

20 TDs with 16 Ints and only 1500 yards passing as a senior, not good!!!

Well darn, Portland State, New Mexico, and Nebraska offered him a scholarship. He must be a stud....NOT

I love how this guy quotes himself twice in a row the minute after he started the post. Guess he couldn't figure out how to edit or just wanted to make it look like people actually agreed with him. Wow.

Has anyone here seen him play...in person? Just wandering?
If anyone has, then a real opinion can be formed. Many here have seen marlon Brown and M Teague, and Zach Rogers play in person. I have ...and have a real opinion. Talk is great, but unless you have seen the kid play, ya can't say he sucks. Video does suck. I can get a tape of my son which will make him look like Al Wilson. I could also find a tape that makes him look like Al Bundy.

You apparently are not familiar with his situation. He was a man among boys in high school. Rhea Co. was dominant his junior and senior seasons.

He wasn't a starter as a soph (they ran the option) and he was not highly recruited. He was very good once he played, but not nationaly known. That is what I wanted to say. Dominant, but not well known.

Well, you have to remember that you are talking about a time before the emergence of recruiting websites and national recruiting services. He would have been highly rated in today's recruiting world.

AS I have stated in numerous threads I HAVE seen him play IN PERSON and he is indeed a kid with a GREAT arm who played on a SUBPAR team. Get his butt to the hill and he can at least give the JV and 1st team D some reps in trying to catch bullets.

I was looking around MaxPreps the other night and if I saw the correct year, Petty's team was 3-7 this year. Which would definitely not translate into good stats.

Wouldn't have made a bit of difference. Casey Clausen was 27-43-0 for 332 yards and two touchdowns in that game. He was about the only guy who played well in that game.

Cutler also couldn't have helped that Donte Stallworth and Travis Stephens coughed up the ball twice, killing UT drives and setting up two LSU scores, or that our defense couldn't stop Matt Mauck, of all people.

And even if he could, Miami was still better than we were.
