I read alot of these sportswriters and other clowns offering their 2 cents and saying that Freeze should not be hired at UT because of his scandal at Ole Miss coupled with UT's current issues. For one, the people that were the root cause of these issues at UT are now gone. They should receive a much more severe punishment than the university. NCAA needs to do the right thing here and issue severe penalties for Pruitt, Neids, and Felton, and other guilty (or sloppy, depending on how you see it) staffers, and cut the university some slack. Fulmer is, or will be, gone as well. It was lack of oversight on the part of the head coach and AD that got UT caught. Not saying that the university admin holds no responsibility, but the most severe penalties should be reserved for the former coaches themselves.
Now, back to Freeze. These talking heads and sportswriters saying that he is a risk because of his past are sounding very hypocritical. I am not suggesting that they may have done anything in their past that would rise to the level of infidelity or being involved with an escort, etc. However, I can guarantee you that each one of them has screwed (no pun intended) up big-time at some point during their lives and someone showed them some grace and gave them a 2nd chance. Why should Freeze not be afforded the same. I have seen the work he has done on and off the field since being fired from Ole Miss. I believe he has seen the err of his ways, accepted his punishments/penalties, and is now a better man for it. Obviously, I do not know the man personally but the fact that his family still stands beside him after what he put them through says a great deal. To me, I think this is the best hire for Tennessee, optics be damned. UT is looking at long road to redemption. It would be nice to have a coach who knows and appreciates the hard work and sacrifices that must be made to achieve redemption and the value it holds for him personally, and for the university as well.
I know that this past season has been tough for all sports in terms of revenue generation. COVID has crushed the budgets of programs and organizations in many ways, especially by limiting the number of fans in stadiums and arenas, drastically cutting off their revenue stream. Although the reasoning for an empty Neyland this past season was different, I hope the the UT admin takes into account how the budget would be impacted if Neyland were to stay empty but for their inability or unwillingness to put the best possible product on the field.
