He was a 22-year-old freshman in 2001 who lit the world on fire. It was obvious that he was going to be a team leader, and that the younger guys were going to look up to him. Then he appears on the cover of ESPN magazine, calling himself "The Future", and the 2002 Vols lost 5 games. the whole team was awash with hubris and self-centeredness that season. Washington's attitude was awful in 2002, and we had several other bad apples at about that time as well. for example, after the 2002 Georgia loss, Clausen spouts off: "If I'd played in that game, we would have won by at least a couple of touchdowns . . . I could have played on one arm and we probably could have definitely beat Georgia." Obnoxious.

I've seen the argument made that 2002 was the bump in the road that should have alerted everyone to the pending collapse. Well, in my opinion, Kelley Washington was the force that started the ball rolling. If he had been more mature, more humble, and a better leader, who knows what would have happened.

Of course, it was Fulmer's responsibility to correct these kinds of attitude problems... so, there's that.

Anyway, I'm just a guy on the internet. What do I know?

IMO, the criticism of Kelley Washington is way overblown.

The impending collapse of the King Phillip Empire began at halftime of the 2001 SECG.

Fulmer is to blame. That's not really the question. The question is what do you do about it to best help the team.

A) He must be held to a high standard and pay a price if he doesn't meet it.

B) But now is NOT the time to deal with that since.... it won't be dealt with now.

C) Booing the team is STILL STUPID since it will negatively impact program image and recruiting which WILL hurt future results whether Fulmer is coach or someone else.

BTW, for those who think booing is appropriate, it will taint the national image of UT's fanbase for years to come no matter who the coach is.

LOL, it's Kelly Washington's fault.....yeah, right. Let's lay the blame for the mess that is UT football at the feet of the one person who's been the constant for years.

BS. Your win loss record and the team's performance on national television is what shapes the national image of your program.

I've never held booing against a fanbase, and I have heard it in every stadium and venue I have ever visited.

You expect a guy that ripped off a couple of gems like 95% of the fans have never played sports.....if I was in the stands I might have booed too, to correct the attitudes of these young men?

We don't have a national image right now. Tennessee football hasn't been relevent enough recently to really have people outside of the SEC to know us or want to know us or have concern about this program.

I guarantee you that the UCLA debacle gave us a national image.

I have never heard such universal agreement about the ineptitude of a coaching staff in my life, no exaggeration.

You know I thought of Kelley Washington today before this post also and I had not thought about him in maybe years. He was not the only 5 star player to tank for UT lately, I was wondering today if that was a coincidence or UT is picking up these shady recuits that others knew of the problems in advance and pass on.

2001 Georgia game. Squib kick, give UGA great field position and play a prevent when the tight end runs wide open on every play until he stops in the endzone for the winning score.:ermm:

Yeah with that prevent defense it took about 6 seconds for UGA to march 50 years, I remember that. I remember at the end of the 01 season when SOS quit, the media was annointing Fulmer leader of the pack.

I think you missed the Sheiks point. I think he was not blaming our current woes on KW, but was saying that the programs lack of success for the last 7 years (and Fulmers apparent lack of control) began with the KW mess.

You may now savage me unmercifully which is the custom. :)

I doubt that anybody suggestes that Foolmer be fired right now. I think we are all trying to raise a stink so this mess will finally be dealt with at seasons end.

If the title of the thread wasn't "I blame Kelly Washington for this whole mess", I might be inclined to agree with you.
