Article: Vols Looking to Minimize Distractions

Looking to play Dormady

Jones said the Vols “would like to” get backup freshman quarterback Quinten Dormady meaningful snaps Saturday against North Texas, if they get an opportunity to rest junior starter Joshua Dobbs.

“That’s our plan, but that’s our plan every week,” Jones said. “This game is a very, very big game for us because it’s the next game, and that’s not coach-speak. It’s hard to win in college football."

This is the most obvious example of "coach-speak" I've ever seen, but then he makes a point to say it's not "coach-speak." And I f@#$ing love it!

Coach Jones has an almost superhuman ability to stay relentlessly positive, focused, and on-message. It's why he's one of the best motivators in the game. I know there are so many people here at VN that hate the "coach-speak", but to me, that's part of why Butch is so great. You can't get him off message. You can't get him to "look ahead." He's going to make sure that those players know that North Texas is the most important game this year! And next Sunday, Missouri will be the most important game this year!

He's a cliche machine. I've just resigned myself to the fact that I'm not the target audience and I tune it out.

A commentator did an impression of him and I nearly fell over laughing. He seems like he'd be impossible to have a normal conversation with.

Hey Coach, can you pass the salt?

"Well you know, I could but what I really want to do, every single day, is what's exactly right for our faculty, our administration, our staff and our resilient student athletes because I am the caretaker of UT football and I take that very, very seriously."

I agree. I'm way more positive on Butch and CO than negative but his act can sure be tiresome. Also he needs a thesaurus.

PS: Volnation, thesaurus is not a dinosaur.

I would like any of you to be forced to publicly speak for hours a week about a game. Throw in the fact that reporters try to play gotcha and I bet each and every one of you develop coach speak before you get through one week. 12 hopefully 13 data points in a year...there is only so many ways to slice it.

Could it be more evident that his motivational word for this season is "resiliency"?. Sometimes a Butch interview feels like one of those corporate motivational meetings we all love so much.

Not coach-speak at all. North Texas is going to be a real challenge. Anywhere but Neyland, we torch them, but distractions at home will make this a real battle for our young football team. Focus will almost be impossible.

I think he should just go with the Belichick route, at least it would be entertaining. I don't guess Butch has earned that privilege yet though.

I just always change the channel for his press confrences. When they catch him at half time and he is pissed they usually get some good stuff out of him though...I don't get it.

What makes you think Butch is one of the best motivators in the game?

I'm cool with the talking points actually as I believe your point is correct. Coaches have to do it.

I could do without the "very very very good football team"

Or " (insert name) is getting better and better and better"

No need for this unless you have the vocab of a Doltasaurus Rex.

Butch took coach speak to a new level today, he used coach speak when discussing the field conditions in Neyland:

“I can tell you this: We’re well aware of it. We’re taking every precaution. Everything we can, we’re doing. And we had a meeting today on it, and we’ll continue to work to have the best playing surface in the country.”

At this point i think Butch has cranked the coach speak up to 11 just to irritate the naysayers. He seems to enjoy trolling them. It's kind of funny watching some on here go crazy about it.

I know it gets old to some, but I don't blame him at all. My favorite is when someone asked him over the summer something like "Is there ever a moment where you aren't thinking about or doing something in regards to your football team and UT?" and his answer was...."No" and then silence! It was great. Go ahead Butch...do your thang!

Wonder what will jones say if we drop one to mizzou or vandy. I'm not ruling anything out after the way we played last week.

At one point, he actually said "It's been a tough year for grass."

Understatement. I can't think of a tougher year for grass. Maybe '87. Maybe.

But the turf's shown tremendous resiliency all year long. Is a young playing surface, but it wants to be here. Give it time...It'll get there.

All the grass can do is keep growing. It's a mow to mow league and that's why the SEC has the best sod around. Blade by blade, we'll work together to build a field we can all be proud of.

Will it take 6-7 seasons to get really good?
