I’ve no love lost for Rick Pitino the man, but my goodness

All speculation. Never been proven. And there is a ton of dirt associated with Rick. Let's not pretend he's cleaner than anyone else

On top of that Rick doesn't beat out Dean Smith. He's an all time great. Not on the mountain though

Don't say that it wasn't proven .... it was proven. We just don't know exactly what role Wooden had. Read that article up above from 1982. This isn't speculation at all. Good lord.

That halftime speech doesn't seem much different than many halftime speeches in high school football locker rooms. Same "game of life" type platitides that are so popular with coaches. Not sure why it's getting so much attention. Seems like a common type of speech, maybe with some different terminology. Pat had a speech in a championship game that's better than the Pitino speech.

I would post the archived article from the LA Times 1982 investigation that uncovered much of this, but it would have a paywall. That article from UPI up above gives a brief summary of it. This is not speculation.

They became a lot more than mere allegations when one of their best players from that era, Bill Walton, finally spoke up about it. Nobody needs a phony for a hero. There has never been a bigger phony than John Wooden.

From the article linked up above :

UCLA, 1964-75: Wooden's Little Helper

"If the UCLA teams of the late 1960s and early 1970s were subjected to the kind of scrutiny Jerry Tarkanian and his players have been, UCLA would probably have to forfeit about eight national titles and be on probation for the next 100 years."

Who would so slander UCLA, particularly during the era of saintly coach John Wooden? Their own legendary center, Bill Walton. Booster Sam Gilbert funneled so much money to players that NCAA probationary poster boy Jerry Tarkanian quipped, "The only team with a higher payroll was the Lakers." The NCAA didn't take action until 1981, by which point Wooden and his ten titles had been retired for six years.

Hmm. I think in this case we shall have to agree to disagree

Just to cement my thoughts though, could you offer me your thoughts on our own General Neyland?

I don't see how a credible argument can be made that Sam Gilbert wasn't supplying UCLA basketball players, during John Wooden's tenure, with what were impermissible benefits under NCAA rules at the time, when Bill Walton and Lucius Allen have said that he was.

I'm not going to play a game of what-about-ism either. My only point is that John Wooden's teams benefited from the improper activity of a booster named Sam Gilbert. General Neyland has nothing to do with that.

So after reading through the word salad above, humor me.....

Would it be safe to say that you view the competitive morality of General Robert Neyland to be superior to that of Wooden?
It's ok man, you can answer the question.

I can already see that I know the answer though..

Be careful throwing those stones at glass houses. Never know when you may be standing in the middle of one my friend !!

History is NEVER clean

What a bunch of nonsense. Read my links.

This was established in a 1982 investigation by the Los Angeles Times. A UCLA booster named Sam Gilbert, provided financial rewards to UCLA basketball players during John Wooden's tenure, which were impermissible under NCAA rules at the time. Two of the players who admitted receiving these rewards were Bill Walton and Lucius Allen. They just happened to be 2 of UCLA's best players from that era.

I don't need word salad. I just need to post links to sources that confirm that information, which I have done. I'm not saying anyone was clean. I'm saying UCLA basketball under John Wooden was dirty, and it has been proven. It's not speculation. It's an established fact.

Sigh. You are focusing on Wooden. This isn't about Wooden.

I don't care about Wooden.

It's a bit deeper.

My series of questions was to establish whether or not you hold the same standards for all re: their morality in terms of willingness to perhaps "stretch" the rules a bit or look the other way on occasion.

My curiosity got the best of me there for moment. No offense was intended.

I have my answer now though so I will shut up.

John Wooden? Wooden is one of the slimiest coaches in history. He had Sam Gilbert bankrolling his program for decades. Tony Bennett, Rick Majerus, and Bo Ryan are some of the guys who I think we’re about as clean as you can be.
You don’t think Majerus called on that Marriott money every once in awhile?
