Hurd happy with summer speed work

What's wrong with hoping to get some big play production also? Hurd thinks maybe he can improve in that facet...rather the point of the whole thread, no? I think pretty much every Vol fan would like to see it as well.

I don't believe Hurd will ever be the homerun threat Fournette, Chubb, Cook, McCaffrey, etc are but when you consider that's damn near the only thing missing from Hurd's game any improvement in that area just adds to the whole.

You missed my point. Everyone wants to see a RB go the distance every play. Hurd does as well, my point in my previous post, Hurd is not Fournette, Fournette isn't Hurd. Hurd is a complete RB striving to get better...Hurd's forte is ground and pound, blocking and catching, and he has ripped off some nice long runs for TDs himself. Nothing I said was a slight on Hurd, rather everything positive, he is a complete RB IMO.

As I stated previously, what else could you ask for? Hurd is the man!!

Can't we all just agree that Hurd and Fournette are both good in their own way? Jeez

Understood, but the point of the thread is that Hurd himself has been working hard at trying to address the one area where he really does suffer in comparison to other elite backs that get named in such conversations...being a consistent threat to break the big play. I think it actually speaks well of Hurd to make that a priority. Shows he's not satisfied. I'm sure he'll be better for it...how much better remains to be seen.

Hurd stiff's Jalen Tabor and sprints to the end zone, TD Tennessee.
I approve this message

Granted, but what happens after that is still on the RB. Regardless of how you found yourself in the secondary can you extend runs by making people miss in space or simply outrun them? (or both) Guys like Fournette, Chubb and Cook are thoroughly vetted in being able to do so, and consistently. Hurd, to this point, has not.

Of course this season has yet to play out so we'll see what Hurd's hard work in the off season produces during the playing season.

I think too often many fans discount great OL play and push those performances into having a great RB. There's no doubt the 3 guys mentioned have played behind better OLs than has Hurd his first two seasons. This season his OL has recognized and experienced talent on a par with these 3 peers. UGA has OL problems with an OL that benched and moved starters for performance last season after producing a string of 4 straight games without an offensive touchdown. Consequently Hurd running behind a good OL vs Chubb running behind a questionable OL this season may give us insight into who is the actual better RB one on one.

To be honest the first consideration there is if Chubb is sufficiently back from his knee injury to even make such a comparison valid. I've no idea how that's going to turn out.

I expect Hurd to do "better" regardless...both from the OL considerations you cite and Hurd simply being a year further along. What we're all wondering is "how much better" and how much of it is in the "splash play" category.

Guess since Jalen wasn't in West Palm Beach creating a new Pratt & Whitney Pure Power 1000G with Geared Turbofan, he made good use of his spare time working on his football skills. Looking forward to seeing him burst through the line this Fall.

It's more than just speed. Fournette is faster (sub-10.7 even back in HS) but Hurd even before wasn't exactly a plodder. Sometimes you get a lane and it really is just a matter of being faster. This is Fournette basically making one person miss and from there it's basically just a track meet and Fournette wins.

Fournette takes it 87 yards to the house - ESPN Video

It's more than that though...often the only reason big runs happen are little moves that keep things going. Like here. Note that it's the "niftiness" at the 25 and 11 yard line that allow this to be a 30yd TD and not just a nice gain.

Hurd working on his speed can only help but to consistently be a big play RB one has to be able to exploit opportunities to extend runs. Hopefully that's something Jalen's also been improving on in the off season.

This was very noticeable in Hurd's huge hit in the UGA game. He had 3 options, run towards the sideline which was clear and use your speed to beat the safety, cut back for a half second and let the 2 O-linemen that were running up from the right clear out the safety leaving a clear path, or lower your shoulder and try to run him over. This is the SEC, you aren't going to run over many athletes in this league.
