In example #162792 of why football can't get here fast enough, the poster responsible for the Megatron's Butthole and Megatron's Butthole Number 2 thread submits the following for discussion...

The term "jumping the shark" is the moment that marks the decline for a TV show and represents the beginning of the end.

A few weeks back, most of our eyes were scarred when an image of a guy that looked like Jim McElwain was naked on top of a shark. Eventually, UF found a fall guy for this (ok, I probably made that part up). Had that guy really been McElwain, humping the shark would have ended his coaching career.

The purpose of this thread (other than to burn more offseason time and to provide CLICK BAIT..see below) is to determine what moment was the beginning of the end for coaches or the moment when they "humped the shark". Responses do not need to be limited to UT and can include other coaches.

Did Butch hump the shark last year against USCe or Vandy? (CLICK BAIT ALERT!!!!!)

Here's my contribution..

Bobby Petrino humped the shark at Arkansas when he met the girl in the volleyball shorts.

I think Butch's fate is still within his control. Whether I think it should be is a different matter, but for now he could win his way back into the good graces of many people who question him. So the shark is still in front of him although if this year gets off the skids I could see people looking back to last season and pegging those losses as the shark.

As far as one of our previous coaches go, Dooley's was undeniably the 2011 UK game. But it was only a matter of time regardless.

Maybe but hiring Sunseri sealed his fate. Had Wilcox been the DC in '12, UT would have probably won 8 games...scary as that seems.

I think we paid Dooley $5 million not to coach. No telling how much worse it may have been if he'd snuck an 8-win season in there.

Hugh Freeze. The left hand didn't know what the right was doing? C'mon man!

Hugh Freeze has 3 potential moments when he humped the shark..

a. Signing that recruiting class with Tunsil/Treadwell, etc.

b. Beating Bama in back to back years (I'm skeptical the NCAA would be investigating with the same vigor had that not happened)

c. The Tunsil bong video/draft night fiasco

As horrible of a loss as that was, his fate wasn't sealed with that loss.

I knew Dooley was done after the 2012 Troy and Mizzou games.

The Mizzou game was a shootout and our defense couldn't stop a nosebleed, but I believe he took knees to play for OT when he had the ball, 1:30 or so on the clock, and at least one timeout after Mizzou's tying score.

I don't think Butch has jumped the shark...yet. In my mind, a loss to GT in the opener or a loss to SC, KY, or Vandy would make him a dead man walking. However, what I think doesn't matter. What matters is the mindset of the powers that be. If Butch gets 7-8 wins per year and the butts stay in the seats($$), then I could see him hanging around for longer than he should.

Not yet.

2017 is a year to remember.

I think he makes it all the way thru without humping a shark.

It was donkey face humping that shark.

CBJ had some near-humps last year. Dipping below .500 in the SEC this year, with losses to UF, UGA, Bama, LSU and one of UK/SCAR/Vandy could sink his boat.

If Wilcox stayed they would've won the east in 2012. One of the best passing offenses in school history was wasted by the sunseri hire.

I think more like 10 wins if Wilcox was the DC. We scored tons of points that year, and lost silly games where we scored 30+ points against bad teams and lost anyway. We should have beaten UGA, MSU, USC, and Missouri for sure. And of course any loss to Vanderbilt is cause for shame. It would not have happened if we won the other games. Not counting UGA as a bad team but we should not have given them 51 points and 5 or 6 rushing TD's. That defense was still more embarrassing even than last year's.

I love it BOM. Great off-season thread. No, Butch hasn't "humped the shark" like Fonzie did on Happy Days, hence :jumped the shark.

Did Butch hump the shark when he had the cook-out or when he lied to the NCAA?

You mean Bruce? Bruce humped the Shark when he lied, the cookout might have been a slap on the wrist if he'd be honest.

And I know he wasn't a coach but Hammy humped the shark either with the hire of Dooley or his announcement on Pearl's status before the tourney
