Notes:

Josh Smith probably won't be available this week but will be soon.

Doesn't expect a QB starter to be announced.

Expects Jumper to start in middle.

It's between Sapp and McDowell on weak side.

Will they play a 3rd backer or play 4-2-5? Will be Austin Smith in all likelihood if they play 3. Bates will see time there.

The OL has practiced every possible combination. Need to develop continuity the rest of week heading into first game.

It starts at Center and that will dictate the rest of the OL.

Blaine asked if they may play a 3rd safety instead of a nickel in the 4-2-5 to get some size in there. Hubbs think Gaulden plays corner opposite Martin. Then the other 3 are Abernathy, Warrior, Kelly. Interesting look.

That's how the Secondary should look all season.

that worries me about the O line. that it's still that unsettled at this point....you'd think with the experience this group has coming back, spring, summer and thus far in to fall camp, we should have a handle on who is going to be where, and in what order.

that we're still unsettled on the line up....is a concern imo.

Just an FYI my impression was that this was more of a matchup scheme for GT. Not a season long secondary.

yep. it's been the plan to have gaulden on the field, though i thought more nickel than at DB. but either way. MA can play nickel too.

This would make a ton of sense considering the way others have successfully defended GT. Several opponents stacked someone behind the MLB then make those two spies of the QB and B-Back. Warrior or Abernathy in that role with their speed and physicality could bring a new twist.

I kind of like what Miami did as well. They blitzed like crazy on early downs. Their blitzes were designed to stop plays before they got started. They gave up some big plays but they also put GT in unfavorable down and distance often.

Yes. OL's have to play as one. Even if they don't make the perfect choice, a "bad" decision is 1000 times better than indecision.

^^This exactly. We need to create 3rd and long for them. Having said that even if we give up some long plays we are fast enough on the back end I think to run them down.

It was once said of Spurrier at UF that he told the DC that he didn't care if he gave up a score or got a 3 and out... he just needed to get the ball back.

I think UT can afford some high risks on D. I think they need to take them and count on the O to produce points.

If Jones tries to "manage" this game... I don't think it will go well.

that, and the only way you build continuity is to pick a line up, and go practice. less than a week to the game and we're still trying to figure out who the center is???

not good.

You make a good point, due to injuries the OL hasn't had the same five guy working together spring or fall. Hard to develop consistency and continuity needed to be effective.

the only one out is Hall. dont recall if anyone else was out during spring or summer.

but even still...this group has a ton of film to review. over 100 starts between the whole group.

it's concerning that with experience like that, there wasn't/isn't a better handle on who would be where, and in what rotation.

figuring out Trey Smith and where he fits in should be the biggest challenge at this point.

Frankly, I think what we are seeing is that the O-line just isnt very talented. They have struggled throughout their time together the last 3 years in pass blocking and it appears no amount of "experience " has changed that.

It's rather remarkable how this remains an issue, now having multiple 5* players and others who have significant playing time. Nonetheless, it is.

Depending on how it unfolds, it may have a serious impact on the QB selection. I believe Dormady is the better downfield passer at this point, but we may need a scrambler just to extend plays if the line can't pass block.

I really hope you're right. If they come out against a very suspect GT defense and look confused, miss assignments and don't protect the QB....there's no excuse for that and it will be a long season.

The staff has said Trey may play guard, to young for the responsibility of playing tackle just now . Smart move.

If this line still can't pass block with this many 4/5* players, tons of experience, and a new ol coach we're in big-time trouble.

I'm considering making a running list of potential excuses Butch can use for a less than stellar 2017 campaign. Looks like O-line chemistry can potentially go in at #2 behind the loss of Kirkland.

It'll be best if he has these on hand for easy reference I'm afraid.

Yeah, I think with his strength he fits perfect there this year. I read somewhere that he did 19 reps of 275 as a barely 18 yr old kid. To give perspective, kahlil repped that same weight like 15 times. That's where kelly will be running all year! WGWTFA!
